You usually have to have symptoms (difficulty urinating, persistant & sharp localized pain, etc), then they will give you contrast and do some sort of imaging to detect it. I've had one in my left kidney (3mm at the time they saw it) since 2009. It quit hurting, so they decided to leave it alone until it flared up again.

Go to a health food store/herbal supplement shop and pick up some hydrangea. Take two pills 3 times daily and drink a LOT of water for 3-4 days. It should help either break up or reduce the size of the stone. It saved me from passing a stone. I take it any time I have kidney pain

Have had 4 stones.... they suck. For me it was usually not keeping hydrated well enough. (work outside).
I still wonder. Since the last stone, I started drinking booze. I think it keeps kidneys flushed out. No stones since! Doctors... over rated (sorry sis)
