Like any city/suburb/small town it can have its nice parts and bad parts. Woolwich is definitely crime-ridden though, There are easily worse places than Woolwich, but the area by the base is on the nicer side.

From my personal experiences, I would consider it fairly ghetto/crime-ridden. I am/was a tourist in that area so maybe that could have been a factor. But I stayed there for around a month, maybe a little less.

This is from my mother, and I think it's a perfect fit for this situation: When I was a child, my father caught me drawing on my bedroom wall with a gray crayola. I was told not to do it again and dad cleaned the wall. I waited until he had gone back to the living room and started in again. Dad came back in and saw I had pretty much re-created the same drawing only this time with a blue crayola. Dad proceeded to spank the living tar out of me, took me to the living room and made me stand in the corner while he and mom finished watching the news. He also told me if he caught me drawing on the wall again, he would beat me until his arm was tired and I would do nothing but stand in that corner every day until he saw fit. I never did it again.

The finale is this: My dad never took my crayons from me. He knew I wanted to draw on the wall, not just use crayons to do it. He dissuaded me from drawing on the wall. He made sure that I used them correctly and let me be. Essentially it's the same principle... guns/knives/etc are tools. If someone wants to abuse the tool to serve a purpose, they will find a way to do so no matter how many tools you remove. Nut jobs just want to kill people, not specifically use guns or knives to kill people. These idiots don't get it and they never will.
