The only current published consumption spec from GM is 1 qt of oil per 100 gallons of fuel. Meaning if you get 17 mpg then every 1700 miles it can consume a quart of oil and be within tolerances.

Find someone with a tech 2 and watch the misfire counts, if any cylinder is missing more than the others do a leakdown test. It can miss but not trigger an SES if it's borderline. If all of the cylinders are hitting evenly then I'd take a look at the valve covers, they've had issues with the internal baffles and have redesigned the PCV several times. If one is missing more than the others then borrow a bore scope and look for scored cylinder walls.

Also check out tsb# 10-06-01-008H, it might apply here. They probably did it when they replaced the pistons though.

Say an oil change is 5,000 miles.

        That's 20 changes in 100k miles.

2 quarts per change of Mobil 1 would be almost $200 is wasted oil alone.

If you're burning 2 qts per service interval - change filter at 5000 miles and never change oil.

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it along to him.

Hard to believe that a vehicle can burn that much oil and be considered by a manufacturer as normal. I have to say I have never had a vehicle burn that much oil, including the ones that had 100k-200k+ miles.

Same here! Hell, my cousin is not mechanically inclined. He felt like he was being lied to by the dealership. He has never had a vehicle burn oil like that.

I've got at least 270,000 miles on my GT and I ragged the ever loving fuck out of it. It never burned oil.

He's running conventional. I thought synthetics didn't burn as fast.
I'm not saying it's right that it uses that much oil, just telling you what my customers have had GM tell them. Most all of my vehicles have had minor-no oil consumption between changes.

As for synthetic, if it leaks it will leak faster and more, if it burns it it will burn it faster and consume more over conventional.

I didn't think you were, I was just doing the first thing that went through my mind when all this started.

The LS motors burn Alot of oil through the pcv system. My z28 was burning 2 quarts of Mobil 1 which is extremely thin. Now with a good catch can I'm only losing about half a quart between changes with 5w30 castrol

                        My 6.0 lq4 2006 burns 0 oil thoug

Sounds dumb but I would go with some Lucas oil engine oil stabilizer to start it off, then look for a cheap catch can system

I guess I'm just lucky to have almost 300k on my 08 and no burning oil and I average 8-10k between M1 oil changes.

I have about 130k on my 05 with the 5.3 and it does not burn oil..

The question is, who is the warranty with? If the vehicle was bought used and the warranty an add on thing, look at the details in the warranty, it is not likely tied to that dealership. Call the warranty company and find another shop to take it to. That is who your fight is really with, not the dealership.
