  • Here is my video of what is now being called the largest tornado ever, absolutely crazy. Excuse the someone shakiness, I had quite a bit of adrenaline flowing at that point in time. This would also be the approximate time it hit Tim Samaras and his crew.

    • I still can't believe of all the chasers Tim Samaras would have been in the position to be overtaken by one. He's always seemed extremely cautious, and quick to drop his equipment, then head to a safe distance. The size of the tornado makes it a little easier to understand though.
I also know the roads out there and they aren't the easiest to navigate.

I haven't looked too much into where Tim was and what exactly happened, however I do know the track of the tornado was a little shifty and also some chasers that thought the track was shifting north a bit got it a little confused for the size growing. (It did turn north though)

They said it went from just under a mile wide to 2.6 in 30 seconds. That is nuts.

But I agree. Of ask the dare devil and ignorant chasers, I can't believe he would be the one that got caught. Sucks big time. You never know when you're going to have an unpredictable one on your hands.

        • Saw this link on Reed's fb. This phased array radar is amazing. The clearity of the spin up of that tornado is very visible in this.

I'm in disbelief. Trying to wrap my head around the whole thing. Absolutely crazy. Thank God it didn't make it into the metro, with all those cars jammed up the death toll would have been in the 100s or even 1000s....
              Have you seen this?

Even the Twin Lakes WSR-88D, sampling at 2300-2500 ft above ground and from a distance of 35-40 miles, showed a delta-velocity that maxed out at 297 knots, potentially using the improved (edited) 2D de-aliasing algorithm -- not sure if TLX has this turned on or not. To my knowledge, this exceeds Greensburg, KS 5/4/07 and is likely the most violent ever sampled by a WSR-88D

I copied this part of some info that was posted to a Facebook page I follow (TheStormCenter). 297 knots is about 342 mph if this is correct. That is nuts!

I hadn't seen that but it wouldn't surprise me one bit; that thing was just insane. The 296MPH rating was 500 feet above the ground, it is generally believed the winds are the stronger at ground level. They also believe that the multiple smaller tornados within the larger one would have easily been 300+ MPH, but they have no way of documenting that.

Very sad about the death count It was discovered that another "chaser" was killed, although he was very new at chasing and I believe this storm was his first storm or first tornado.
