  • My brother (in Okc) was looking at the garage drop-in units before this happened.

    Here's what he told me:

12 person one is $3500. 6 person is $2700. Takes half a day to install. My company will pay interest for them if you finance it. They are gps tagged and have winches and jacks installed to the door off if you are trapped by debris. Pretty sweet deal even if a tornado never happens. Peace of mind.

    • That's horrible. We've had some awfully close calls around here and others some have torn the town apart. We are just on the edge, so either it hits hard or not at all.

        • What's to keep you from doing one of those in garage shelters you can back over under your porch? My guess is they anchor the shit out of it to your house?

I would rather tear up my porch and have to add some extra strength yet still be below ground.

Why did they kill the sirens at 1:16?

I dunno.. If there's a choice I'd want it away from the house. That way if it suffers a direct hit you may not have to wait until debris is cleared out before being able to get out.

i was thinking the same thing, this shelter is cool, but I would not want to have to back my cars out of the garage and into hail storms to use it. Especially since 99% or hopefully 100% of the times it is used it will be for a miss.

according to the website they place them in the garage where there is at least a 2ft opening from where you park. this gives you enough room to get inside, but also leaves the car above the shelter so that gives you another barrier to try and keep most of any debris from falling on top of the doors.

                          • This is part of the clip on Fox I was watching live when the tornado dropped. Odd to see it from the perspective of a helicopter view.

Could have been several causes...but the major reason the siren stopped was likely power was interrupted. Lightning strike to a power line, tree branch blew into the power line and tripped the breaker, debris hit the line and knocked it down. This happens frequently during severe storms unless each siren location has its own generator/battery backup. Some of those old Thunderbolt sirens use a SHITLOAD of power.
