  • The newscasters who were telling everyone without a storm shelter to get in their car and try to run from the tornado should be fired and tried for involuntary manslaughter (overboard, I know, but I'm pissed).

Every single stormchaser will tell you, including Tim, that you do NOT get in your car and try to outrun it. You get inside the safest part of your house, and hunker down.

Being in Oklahoma, being a part of "Tornado Alley", and knowing every year your state can and will be hit by a tornado, these dumbass newscasters should have known not to tell people to try to run from the storm. For Christ's sake, you have THE meteorological school in the entire country within your borders...and you don't know not to tell people to run. Fucking outrageous.

@Leah, it was the scariest thing I have ever been through. Words and video dont do it justice, it was an incredible situation and I will never forget that tornado.

@asphaultjunkie, I agree, that was not sound advice whatsoever. I always tell friends to never get in their vehicle and try to out run it. This whole situation has caused a huge riff in the storm chasing community, things will never be the same after this. For someone like Tim Samaras and his crew to get killed.... is just crazy. They had to have been right behind us, we were one road down from them and I imagine that someone as careful as Samaras wouldn't have just been sitting here.... I believe he was running just like we were and was just a couple minutes behind or made the decision to turn north (which I almost did) as the tornado was tracking east for some time.

Also this is our video from the day. At 6:15 you can see a few seconds of video as the tornado was overtaking us, at that point my partner dropped the camera in his lap and at that point we were just trying to make it out alive. At 7:30 you can see the wedge just after we got away from it (when it turned north). This was about the time it was hitting Tim Samaras and his crew.

        What a day
Dang! That was close! Thanks for the article and video. Glad y'all made it out of there!

        • RIP - At the end of the day it seems we're still unable to predict tornadoes very well. Well - I see the "amateur" people do much better than what I can get on main stream news.

However, without people like Tim, y'all on this board and all the others - we'll never get there either. Personally, I DO appreciate that there are professionals out there gathering data and trying to figure them out.

It would be bad ass if science could get to the point to predict a storm, when/where it'll drop tornadoes and give people hours instead of minutes notice.

That probably won't be in my lifetime, but y'all gotta keep trying.

Really? How the hell are you going be safer in the house when there is nothing left but the slab? In a small tornado yeah sure but not a big one.

Who was telling people to get in their car and run? I saw exactly none of that. In fact, the State issued statements telling them if they were going to evac, evac early, not to wait until the storm came. They had 3 fucking days notice of what was going to happen. I'd like to know how you came to this conclusion.

It's a hell of a lot safer than your car, genius.

How is a house not safer than a car? Especially during a grid lock when there is nowhere to run.

A news anchor in Oklahoma as the storm was approaching. There is a you tube video of it. It was somewhat subtle but something along the lines of take shelter immediately if you can, get in your car and driver south. Extremely poor advice.

                        Agreed 100%

I've said that even if I was at work that if one of these monsters is gonna likely hit my dealership, I'm leaving if I have enough time. I wouldn't even care if I got fired. Better to be fired for leaving rather than stay and risk being killed or seriously hurt.

I guess I missed that, as none of the coverage I saw stated as such, nor do I know that any of the anchors up there are stupid enough to give such awful advice. They have a few REALLY good weather people up there. And anyone who has ever been through even the threat of a tornado knows getting in your car is fucking ignorant.

I'm not sure what you are agreeing with. I said getting in your car is dumb. You seem to be of the mindset that it's the proper thing to do.

                            • I remember specifically during the KFOR helicopter coverage of the Moore tornado when they were discussing the strength they thought it had become...that unless you were underground in a storm shelter...that the standard procedure of getting to the lowest floor and interior room of your house WOULDN'T matter in an EF5 and that nobody would survive above ground...the meteorologist said it on live TV...get out of the way...get in your car and get away from it. I was astonished.

They were saying that for the Moore Tornado. They said the second safest place from being side your house was in your car.
