They're suspecting they got hit by a satellite tornado.
Not much is known about the satellites, but they say they spin up around larger tornados and suspected winds can be 500+mph.

He was one of the most knowledgable and safe chasers out there. If anyone cares to read, this is mine and my chase partner's account of getting into the tornado (we were inside of it for a bit) that ultimately killed Tim Samara's crew.
Also this is our video from the day. At 6:15 you can see a few seconds of video as the tornado was overtaking us, at that point my partner dropped the camera in his lap and at that point we were just trying to make it out alive. At 7:30 you can see the wedge just after we got away from it (when it turned north). This was about the time it was hitting Tim Samaras and his crew.
