He is a chaser, so he was more than likely using real time radar and new which way and how fast the storm was moving. I chased the Shawnee, Oklahoma storm the day before and got pretty close, but we knew which was it was going and we had an out.

I was flipping channels and had just landed on Fox, there had LIVE footage from a helicopter that was surveying the damage in the area when the funnel started dropping. They actually showed the funnel come down and turn into the tornado. It was wild, live footage from a helicopter of it turning from a funnel into the silver tornado, then turning beige/brown at the bottom, then the debris coming up into the tornado then the tornado becoming obscured from the rain/debris since they were on the south side of it.

It was amazing to watch it happen live from that vantage point.
