A lot of that was spent in a storm cellar. Our biggest fear was having a tree or some piece of heavy equipment fall on the door so we had a couple of 20 ton bottle jacks and assorted 4x4s in the corner."It's another burrito, it's a cold Lone Star in my hand!"

I've seen new schools with the signs, but anything above ground really is not going to be able to with stand a EF4-5. Most new (TX, have not seen OK schools) are a lot of CMU and steel - they have signs for shelter areas (usually). I think they'd help a lot for EF-3 and below.
So when I say it needs to be defined - technically there is a shelter, but it's a lot like a safe room. You can feel confident about EF3 and below - but anything can happen for EF4-5. Only safe place is below ground, and I do not see many schools with a big underground facility. The national guard ended up rolling in and blocking everything off, so I had to leave the area.
Thanks bro.
There have been some truly amazing people today also, several that lost everything immediately ran from their homes to the elementary school and started digging to try and save lives.

Then there are the ones that are meant to be "hidden" and functional. This is typically used with new construction and remodels. This is where you take like the master bedroom closet or the wash room and make it a shelter. You use special panels and framing on the walls here to make it resist windborne debris. You have a door that swings inward that can resist a direct impact from a 100 mph 2x4 'missile'. After installation, you can't really tell that the space is a shelter. Most people install a second, functional door in the space and would only use the 'vault door' in the event of an emergency. The door is one of the most expensive parts of the room.
Here's a link to a panel manufacturer: http://www.stormblocker.com/
Here's a link to the DuPont shelter: http://www2.dupont.com/Stormroom/en_US/ It uses kevlar.
Watch some of the test videos of these rooms to see how they work. It's impressive. You can expect $8K minimum installed cost on something like this and possibly more depending on the size of the room.

All of my extended family have checked in, everyone is ok as far as I know, Im getting second or third hand info.
A team I race with is based in Moore. Everyone is ok, according to the checkin they posted this morning. They arent able to get to thier shop, but it is supposed to be about 2 miles north of the main damage. Apparently the storm was dropping mail in Branson, according to his post."If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

Was a long night.. Went to work on afternoon shift at American here in Tulsa and shortly after 3 they shut the base down and sent everyone to the safe rooms. Gave the all clear around 4 but all night long the intercom was giving warnings of wind, lightning, heavy rain and flooding. Glad to hear the death count has been lowered, but I still hurt for all the people in Moore..Natural law. Sons are put on this earth to trouble their fathers.
