That is just a nightmare scenario. So incredibly sad. I'm sure people are going to say there is blame to lay somewhere but really.....how can you truly prepare such a large area with so many buildings and structures for a 2 mile wide tornado with 250+ mph winds? There's only so much you can do in that situation.

They interviewed a parent from that school. He said there were no underground shelters. All of the meteorologist I've watched today all said the only things you can do is get under ground or chance it in a car.

I ended up grabbing my dads spare truck and made a few shuttle runs of people from the neighborhood that I could drive through to the shelter down the road.
The national guard ended up rolling in and blocking everything off, so I had to leave the area.

There have been some truly amazing people today also, several that lost everything immediately ran from their homes to the elementary school and started digging to try and save lives.

A total of 24 kids were in the main hall like they were instructed to do. The roof collapsed then the water lines broke and they drowned from being pinned under the roof.

This is what got me. I nearly drowned years ago and it was a very painful thing the experience. To think. Shit now I'm tearing up again. This hurts my heart.

I did most of my growing up in tornado alley from Kansas to N. Dakota.

A lot of that was spent in a storm cellar. Our biggest fear was having a tree or some piece of heavy equipment fall on the door so we had a couple of 20 ton bottle jacks and assorted 4x4s in the corner.

My grandmother lived two exits south of where the tornado crossed up until about a year ago. They get a tornado that rips through there every couple of years. The 99 storm was bad obviously but people tend to forget there was one three or four years ago that did minimal damage. That is an obvious place for repeat storms but they just keep right on building in both directions off of I35 in that area between Norman and OKC.
