  • Detection System Protects FOBs from Cameras, Rifle Scopes

TAMPA — A San Diego-based small business called Torrey Pines Logic displayed a small, mobile optical detection system at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference here. It emits a laser pulse to detect nearby surveillance gear such as cameras, rifle scopes or various observation lenses.
The Beam 100 Optical Detection System is engineered to detect optical targets out to just beyond a kilometer, providing a protective envelope for forces on a Forward Operating Base or small units on the move in a fast-moving tactical situation, said Russell Purcell, Lead Engineer, Torrey Pines Logic.
In essence, the technology is designed to let forces know if they are being “surveilled’ or watched by a nearby adversary or potential adversary, Purcell explained.
“So the laser pulse comes in and reflects off of each piece of glass inside a lens. Return pulses create a signature. The receiver captures and analyzes that signature. You don’t get glass, bottles and non-optical devices. If you get a detection is going to be an object of interest to you,” he said.
The Beam 100, which continuously scans a 360-degree field of view, is connected to a computer which uses algorithms, software and digital mapping technology to geo-locate the origin of the signature of the optical device in the area of interest, Purcell added.

Not like it fucking matters. Oh look someone is watching the FOB. Well no shit. So they can see a camera lens from a 100yrd distance. Not like they are gonna send anyone out after it.

I see the technology advancement benefit but to say it will go to help FOB security is pure bullshit. Much less ever get used.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

1Km is just a little over 1000 yards isn't it? Seems pretty helpful to me. Not just for an FOB but like the article says, on a fast response team or for recon it would be pretty helpful I would think. Guess it just depends on how big the overall package would be.

Welcome to the USRR circa 1982. They had a system like this 30 years ago that would zap a 400 watt laser into the objective of the optic blinding the user permanently. You will find old NATO spec Zeius binoculars with a reflective coating on the objective lens to try to defeat the laser.

the way it works now, there is no way in hell this is going on a fast response team or some recon team overwatching. too many pieces and too bulky.

2013, we have Counter Rocket and Mortar CRAM systems that can reverse azmith trajectories and allow for accurate split second calculation of point of origin. BUT yet, we have bases that get hit daily at the same time each ay by indirect fire (rockets and mortars). The Army has the tech, the equipment and it is field portable but yet these same camps get hit day after day by one can only assume the exact same assholes. With CRAM they can return fire with anything from a 60mm mortar to a 155mm howitzer or they can call it into on station air assets. But nope, get in the bunkers for the next 15 minutes till it is over. We will meet back tomorrow for the same nonsense.

So, yes, this is good advancement in tech BUT it will be fielded to bases that don't need it and nor will they use it.

I spent the better part of my first years out here basically auditing the Army on how they defend and with what. This would be put in Bagram where who gives a shit if they are glassing the camp. It won't make it's way to Tillman where it matters and could make a difference. Part of my time I drove convoys in Kabul so we could get from one base to the other, I reported no fewer than a dozen times "hey, white corolla, plate number #### was filming the convoy" or "guy on roof top across from ECP with camera or cell phone looked to be taking notes". Never once did anyone really give a shit. "uh, okay. (back to video games)"

This will lead to advancement elsewhere that is helpful but if they say "oh, we need this billion to fund it to keep the troops safe" they are full of shit.
