I don't understand the mentality of grooming your employees to succeed in their job field and NOT reward them for achieving the goals you trained them to achieve. Why are employers always saying "we can't find good help"... I hear it a lot in my line of work... ? Simple. You're willing to train the fuck out of your better employees, the ones that make you money, and then refuse to pay them what they are worth. There's a reason head hunters exist and there's a reason they make good money.
If a company/local climate declares that someone with XXX experience and XXX achievements is worth Y, you better pay that person Z. Someone else will. And you'll be wondering why you're stuck spending your corporate dollars training employees that leave your ass. It's simple. Other companies are more than willing to staff themselves with highly qualified individuals so that they can gain an edge. An edge on YOU. It's like the damn Taliban using the weapons we sold the rebels 2 decades ago on us and wondering why we have such a hard time beating them! It's our fucking weaponry! We trained them! I second the find a job that pays better and put that on the table. Remind your boss how much you enjoy where you are and you would love to stay there, but you feel that your skills are worth more.
That or beat yourself up and blame it on your boss like in Fight Club."Any dog under 50lbs is a cat and cats are pointless." - Ron Swanson

This is the exact shit that just happened to me. I've busted my ass up here for the last two years, and have gone out of my way to learn as much as I can from everyone around me. Slowly but surely I start to be noticed by Technical Directors and such. I finally get one of the coveted positions for flight test. Do that a few times and excel because I know the technology very well, and the culture of the customer (I'm prior military and the customer is military). My direct supervisor comes to me and tells me I'm a great engineer and whatnot, I have a lot of potential, and I'm VERY underpaid for what I do/know.
Fast forward a couple of months and raises come out and I get shit on. My boss then tells me I'm in for a promotion (we have a selection board so it's not guaranteed). I figure my best chances to get it are to tell him that I REALLY want the promotion and to "remind" him of my skills and experience. I print out a job req. for an open position (what the promotion would take me to), update my resume, and take them to him. I go line by line through the job req., and my resume, showing him how I fit all the experience/education requirements for the position and highlight some of my most recent work. Again, no dice.
At that point I ended up looking for another position and found one closer to home (Dallas) and ended up getting it. I end up getting two promotions (same type of company doing the same type of work), 17% increase in pay (that's not even factoring in the difference in cost of living), and full relocation package. I told my boss yesterday that I'm leaving and it takes him all of 3-4 hrs to match the offer...told him a matching offer isn't going to do it.

Then the guy down the street at another yard needs one of those guys, so he offers him more money, and away he goes. I have gotten calls from smaller yards that dont know I am in DFW and offer me a salary plus cash under the table to come there, and every now and again Ill get a call from one in the DFW area with a similar deal.
I just turned down a promotion that I was looking forward to this week. My boss is having his position split, and I was in line to move up to it. the downside is that he wanted to give up my area because it doesnt meet performance goals, and he hasnt gotten performance bonuses due to that. So once I found out that the position would require a bonus every month in order to get what I currently make, and the likelyhood of that happening was about 2/12 a year, I decided I'll go elsewhere at some point, and stick to where I'm at in the meantime."If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

Last job I left I took less pay coming in with the assurance that if I proved my worth, I would get raises quickly. A year later, no raise... buddy calls me with an offer that was double what I was making.
No-brainer obv... they offered me 26% to stay. I offered them the deuce
