  • How do you go about asking for a raise/promotion?

    I'll keep this as short. I've been with my company for over 6 years, nearly 3 years at my current position, which I'm making entry level pay for the position. I've just recently gone through my third yearly review within my department with my score increasing each year since I started this position. I'm always the first to volunteer to take on extra work, travel, or learn something new. I come in early and stay late when needed to get the job done. At this point in my current position, I haven't been doing the entry level work that I'm being paid for nearly 2 years, I'm way past that.

    At some point here I'd like to buy a house, get married, etc... but that won't be easy at this pay grade. I know I can't just walk into my bosses office demanding a raise or a promotion, the corporate world doesn't quite work that way. Aside from reminding my boss of everything that I put in and telling him I'm interested in moving up in the company, taking on extra responsibilities, and learning new skills, what else is there to say?

    More than once, I've slapped a pay stub down on the desk and said "This isn't cutting it." And it's worked, but certainly not for everyone. You need to state a business case as to your responsibilities, and why you deserve more money.

      I've never asked for a raise, in the Govt. we are supposed to get 3% annual merit, but I don't know if we are getting it this year.

              Ive done that, well, similar. I handed the boss my last bank deposit from my previous gig, and then my check that I got that morning. I asked him if the roles were reversed, if he wouldnt have already packed up his desk and hit the dusty trail. I was promissed equal pay when they recruted me.

              I cant help with a corperate position, my base pay is the same as everyone else in my department. If I want a raise, I need to up my commision, and that is all on me.

                I usually just walk in the office and demand a raise from the owner. I then laugh at myself for asking myself for a raise and then deny myself.
                Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

                  Back when I worked retail, I had a customer getting pissy in the store when I wouldnt let them "return" a product that I watched them grab off the shelf on the way to the counter (we also had zero sales that day, so I knew his story was BS) so when he asked to speek to the "person in charge" I said sure, spun around 360 degrees and asked how I could help him. The look on his face was priceless!

                    I've been working on my case here recently for a raise/promotion. What you need to do is look up average salaries for your current work role and get a good idea of what you should be getting paid versus what's out there. Gather the reasons, and any evidence you have to support your claims, and present them in a humble/friendly manner. You also have to be prepared to walk, as said earlier. Look at websites like www.salary.com and www.glassdoor.com for supporting evidence on average salaries. What I found out from looking at websites like this is that people who work at our competitors are happier and are paid more. Something like 150% of my salary for doing the same work. Make sure you preface what you are about to say with the truth, don't lie. I told my employer that I liked the company and that I would prefer to stay with this company, because that's the truth, but I feel seriously underpaid and feel like the work I do deserves more. Be firm about it; don't sound plaintive or begging.

                      I understand having to be ready to walk but I'm not going to leave a job without having something in place, which means I need to have another offer on the table. The last thing I want to do is leave this company, I like where I'm at with the company, just not the pay. At this point, I'm making less money than when I started because of the increase in insurance over the past 2 years.

                          Walk in and ask for a raise, whats the worst thing they can say? NO? Go in with valid points showing your worth. If you dont get what you want start looking for a new job. I've always made much bigger jumps in pay by going to other places.

                            Get copies of these from HR and have them handy when you go in to state your case. It's always better to have more than enough stats/proof that you honestly deserve a raise than to hold out your hand with no hard evidence to back up your case.

                              My wife (US Army) is supposed to get 1.7% this year and 1% next year. Woohoo, imagine what we can do with another $25 a year!
