How do you go about asking for a raise/promotion?

That's the frustrating side of office politics, and having a manager that has no business being a manager. It's appropriate that he got fired, anyone in ANY position that shows that kind of negligence towards their responsibilities should be relieved of them.

I remember all the frustrations he was dealing with regarding his boss. He felt severely unappreciated and was giddy that he got a job offer after an interview. He was even happier to stay where he was though, I feel the job offer gave him the confidence to get the ball rolling. Because of that it all worked out terrifically in the end.

Fear of change will absolutely kill upward mobility, good for him. On a similar note, I was preparing to quit when I got the offer to come out to CA, due to similar frustrations. Now I have a manager who actually takes interest in how I am doing, rather than feeling like just another replaceable cog in the machine.

We're all replaceable, but at least I can feel like they'll work to keep me, rather than being just another number. Perception is a big part of contentment, though almost tripling one's salary certainly helps too.

It was funny how he told me he would have happy with just matching the 10K offer and moving him to a different department would have sufficed. The extra $300 a check on top of the 10K and watching "that bastard weasel" state blankly at the desk while his GM talked to him for 30 minutes about his goals and aspirations, then laid out a "tentative counter-offer that he should have been presented last week" was the icing on the cake. He felt pretty sure his old bosses' fate was laid out before he was ever called into the office.

I got a raise last year and didn't even sell anything!!! (just joined the company last September...)

My raises come in the form of busting my ass and exceeding quota. If you seriously want to move up quickly/bigger raises, it's typically due to leaving your current company in favor of one that wants you and is willing to pay more.

IMO, that's the way a true bonus should work.

Employee - "But I got a 3.0 on my review why did I not get a raise"(3 means met expectations, 4 above average, 5 freaking rockstar and I think we only had 3-5 in the company get a 5.0)

Manager - "Thank you for meeting expectations, you can keep your job another year"

Our reviews are always bullshit. We hear shit like "we gave you 3's so that way on the next one we can show that you improved with a 4...but it really means that we can keep you hear at the same pay and there is no paper trail that says you do a great job"

For some reason this department on this contract is the ONLY one that does not promote from within. They will hire a coordinator off the street, pay him $220k and have a specialist teach him how to do the job and even do it for him. But won't promote the specialists up and hire another specialist in his place.

I gave up trying to get through to them and when I told them I was leaving I kept my word. Luckily for me they respected me for it and asked me to come back after 9 months. Of course at the same pay grade and title.

Friday I have an interview with our ESA group for an open position. It's essentially the next step I would take to move up in our IT department and would be a huge promotion for me as long as I nail my interview. I wanted a chance for promotion, here's my shot.

President asked me to work on some European deals today. Hope I don't have to fly out and look at this stuff.

At the end of 2010, I had my yearly review and my boss kissed my ass. I got the highest employee rating that HP had. I personally pulled in several million dollars in revenue from three different accounts. I was also the most billable person in our entire group. I had also been promoted earlier in the year with no raise for that.

I got a $2000 merit raise and a $3000 bonus.

I proceeded to tell my boss that is wasn't satisfactory and I wanted something done about it. I had gone through two pay cuts at HP under the previous CEO and I was just then getting back to the pay level I had been getting. I was particularly upset that I had gotten a promotion without a raise. The the boss uttered these words.

"we'll the promotion just looks good on your resume"

He then told me he would look into it and asked me to give him 90 days. During those 90 days I decided to take him up on his assertion. Guess what, he was right. about 120 days later I put in my notice.

HP isn't a company that gives counter offers. But they sure as hell did that time. Not only did they come back with a huge raise (better than the pay I was offered on the other job) they also offered me two months pay as a retention bonus. My boss even gave me veto power on my assignments.

If he had listened to me a few month earlier, it could have saved a ton of cash. I would have been very satisfied with a $10K raise at the time. Instead I got a $30K raise and $20K in retention bonus money.

Well now I'm up for another promotion to the Master level of my job code. That means I have to go to a review board and get their approval. It's a load of crap because they regularly hire people into the master level without any review. We've got a couple in that level that have no business being there. Basically they had better give me the promotion or I'll go find a promotion somewhere else.

And it better not be just so my resume looks better.
