At this point, I'm making less money than when I started because of the increase in insurance over the past 2 years.
I do understand your point but an increase in your personal expenses, insurance or otherwise, is not a reason for a company to give you a raise. I would highly suggest not using that in your request. You have to argue that you bring more value to the company than you did last year, through experience, efficiency, etc

Also, don't get too comfortable, I am betting insurance will be going up more in the coming years.

Contact a good head hunter that works in your field. Get your resume up to date, and let him find a deal for you. If he does, make sure it is what you want, and then make your exit. Don't let the old boss give you a raise to stay. If he did not think you were worth more yesterday but gives it to you today.........he will hate you tomorrow. Just be SURE the new deal is good. Remember, if you find one better deal, there are more.

You need to put your balls on his desk. I wrote down a list of basic living costs and showed my boss it was more than I make each month and it took two months but I now have more wage and hours.

My job for the past 6 months is the same that I quit a year and a half ago. Back then, I gave them several notices starting in June. "Promote me to the open positions or in Sept. I am looking for a job". When September came and I was still in the same spot, I kept my word and looked for a job. In November after I had found a job, interviewed and had an offer, I told them "promote me into the open position that I have been doing or I will not be back in December after I go on leave". Dec 28, 2012 I was supposed to be arriving in Afghanistan from leave and I called from the couch in my underwear with my coffee "I am not coming back, thanks".

After 9 months off, they were calling me. I took a position back with the same folks for the same pay as I what I left but doing 1/4 of what I was doing. When I left they had to hire 4 people to do what I had been doing and now I can sit back and almost consult. Not sure how my tactic could help you but one thing is for sure. They know that I am a man of my word and when I tell them I am doing something they don't question me. A few months ago we had a discussion about me leaving back then. I asked if they would have respected me had I stayed. Let's just say they respect me more now.

Being in the contacting world we don't have much room to move up, at least in my field. I am an expense to the company and don't make a widget they can sell. It is easier to justify expanding the field with more bodies than it is to promote to a higher pay scale. This is all about relationships and reputations. I have a great ones.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Yeah don't do that. lol Most business owners don't care.

You need some ammo before you begin this process.

First, find another job that pays better for what you do. So you don't look like a complete idiot when they say "sorry, too bad" and you have to act like you were "just joking". haha

Be nice, be honest. A lot of the times they don't even know what you're getting paid. Tell him you'd be more comfortable at a higher salary. That you like working there but to continue you'd like more compensation. Don't be unreasonable but if he comes back and asks what you need come back slightly higher than what you're looking for. He might accept or counter. Don't come across demanding unless you're willing to lose your job. If they don't want to give you more money then I guess you know your answer and move on to something else.

just remember, everyone thinks they should make more than they do.

Prove to them why you're worth more, and you shouldn't have a problem getting it.

I'm way overpaid for what I do. I'd love to do more though.

that's what happens when you get in with the Perot family! If you ever see Sr.'s head of security wandering around there, Steve is his first name. Tell him Matt at Dell says his gun is just a toy.

Ask him to show you the cabinet with the M249 SAWs and their other "toys".
