That seems like such a drastic measure for something that may never happen.

The odds are that it will happen if you carry the gene....it's not an "if," it's a "when." The preemptive mastectomy and reconstruction is a long multi-surgery procedure, but at the end of the day, it's an easier road than treating breast cancer.

Exactly.

My wife had the same testing done a few years ago... then had the same procedure. She was an even greater risk though - 93% for breast cancer and nearly that high for ovarian cancer, and her family history is full of women being diagnosed with cancer at or near the age of 30.
