Having a near 4 year old I can see it perfectly. Their thumbs have way more strength than their index fingers. When my son was little anything that required pressure from your fingers to operate he would use his thumbs to attempt to operate.

I completely agree, and although I have my "go to" pieces loaded, but unchambered, in locked metal boxes, stories like this still make me double think my methods. As they should, I suppose.

Even though I have all firearms in a safe in the closet, I still store them loaded, but unchambered. Just in the off chance I go full retard it will prevent a ND.

We already are +1 as of 6 months ago. I can't wait till she is running around and getting into things. Real house child proofing will happen in October when I get home next. They make a magnetic drawer lock that requires a magnet.

(1) "Child" means a person younger than 17 years of
age.
(2) "Readily dischargeable firearm" means a firearm
that is loaded with ammunition, whether or not a round is in the
chamber.
(3) "Secure" means to take steps that a reasonable
person would take to prevent the access to a readily dischargeable
firearm by a child, including but not limited to placing a firearm
in a locked container or temporarily rendering the firearm
inoperable by a trigger lock or other means.
(b) A person commits an offense if a child gains access to a
readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal
negligence:
(1) failed to secure the firearm; or
(2) left the firearm in a place to which the person
knew or should have known the child would gain access.
(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this
section that the child's access to the firearm:
(1) was supervised by a person older than 18 years of
age and was for hunting, sporting, or other lawful purposes;
(2) consisted of lawful defense by the child of people
or property;
(3) was gained by entering property in violation of
this code; or
(4) occurred during a time when the actor was engaged
in an agricultural enterprise.
(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an offense under
this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
(e) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor
if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious
bodily injury to himself or another person.
(f) A peace officer or other person may not arrest the actor
before the seventh day after the date on which the offense is
committed if:
(1) the actor is a member of the family, as defined by
Section 71.003, Family Code, of the child who discharged the
firearm; and
(2) the child in discharging the firearm caused the
death of or serious injury to the child.
(g) A dealer of firearms shall post in a conspicuous
position on the premises where the dealer conducts business a sign
that contains the following warning in block letters not less than
one inch in height:
"IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT, OR ABANDON
AN UNSECURED FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE
LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN ACCESS TO THE FIREARM."

When I moved into my last place my roommate had kids so I immediately purchased a metal gun cabinet (not a vault) and installed a lock on the closet door that the cabinet was in. I wasn't about to be the cause of a child's or anyone else's death. The only hot firearms were the ones I had in my immediate possession such as my CHL or my rifle if I had it out and taking it somewhere.

Sad thing all around. I would say have charges brought against him so hopefully others will learn and i dont have kids but i could see a kid doing that. Like said above a 2 year old doesnt know any better as far as holding a gun. The barrel probably grabs their attention to look down it. Just a sad case. RIP little one

Yep. Keep useful guns loaded, but in a good safe that is easily accessible. Get a dog to aide in alerting for trouble.

Same here. That poor father has to live with this. I can't see making an example of him is going to make him feel any worse.

I keep all guns in a safe except one shot gun. It has a trigger lock on it. My son is old enough to know better. But I have preached to him just because he is well versed in gun safety. His friends can do dumb shit.
