You can get the weber fire starters at Home Depot as well...I think they're $3 for 24 or so. You'll really like the flavor that you'll get from it as well as the ease of maintaining temps...it really makes long smokes very simple...(briskest, etc)
Royal Oak is good stuff, I just picked up 6 bags of it Saturday to stock up for the summer. I just use a propane torch to the center of the coals for a minute or so and they start right up.

I got a 34 lb bag of Stubb's brand that Costco sells, $16. Several customers and Costco peeps said it was good, figured I'd try a bag and see. I still have 4 - 5 more cooks to use up the first 2 bags I got, so maybe next weekend at the pace I'm grilling. :P

The only one I've found that I would stay away from so far is the B&B that Academy carries, that stuff spits and pops like crazy and leaves a ton of ash. If I can't get Royal Oak I use either BGE or The Real One. Apple wood chucks makes for some pretty tasty stuff.

That's a great idea...I'm going to have to try that! I've been using one of those charcoal chimney starters, and it's really good to get the coals burning evenly, from the beginning. ...just light the starter cube under it, wait for the topcoals to get hot and spread them out evenly. I have the XL BGE and one of the downsides is that it's harder to get the coals evenly lit, especially on low temp cooks.

Yeah, the mesquite wood does that; even the mesquite lump charcoal.
