  • Got a question about riding lawn mowers?

Mother's day is coming up and I wanted to get my Mom a new lawn mower (riding). She mows a full acre of land so it needs to be 42" or bigger.

But all I am finding is automatic lawn mowers that you have to keep a foot on the gas pedal the whole time you are bouncing across rough terrain or the Hand hydro static. At least the ones where the deck has wheels on it, which I think is a must.

Does anyone have the hand hydro static? Does it mow fast enough?

Jesus, I just wanted a simple lawn mower that has deck wheels and was a manual transmission. WTF happened to all these? I can find 42" manuals, but without deck wheels.

Hydrostatic is the best. I just got rid of a really simple JD 42" hydrostatic.
    Yes, they mow plenty fast.

I used to mow 3 acres on a 46" hydrostatic kabota. Took around 3 hours.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I really like the Kubota diesels. Very low maintenance, and the last FOREVER.
If you can get one of these or find a nice used one. Go for it, it's worth it.

LOL, while I tend to agree. My mom is 78 years old. Don't think she will be sporting one of those.

My Troy-bilt has a hand controlled hydrostatic speed lever. I bought it last year at lowes for like $1399. It has a 46" deck and the rollers on the deck. So far it's been a really good mower and is pretty comfortable for a mower.

Does she still drive a car?

If so, the hydrostatic drive mowers are not hard to drive. I prefer them over a hand shift. I used to mow 4 1/2 acres on a hydrostatic mower and the ground was nowhere near smooth once you got away from the house. Never had issues bouncing around or foot slipping off.

What I did not like about some of the Hydro mowers, is every time you step on the brake, it thru it back into neutral. Then you had to start the process over again. For wide open spaces that is fine, but she has to mow around fence posts quite a bit. So easing on the brake a little and then letting off is the way to go.

I bought a 42" craftsman 21 hp 6 speed manual with tight turn. I think it will help her more than the hydro static drive system. Wanted a 46" , but I don't think she can lift it back up

Thanks for the input. peace out.
