  • And my response to that is, what the fuck would DHS regulations (assuming that they're actually even effective) have done to prevent this accident? Those regs are aimed at preventing the use of volatile chemicals in terroristic activities, not preventing accidents.

Right, but it is still the case for almost all plants around.

(KCEN) -- We've just learned shocking new information about the fertilizer plant explosion that decimated parts of the city of West.

According to a new Reuters report the West Fertilizer plant was storing 1,350 times the amount of ammonium nitrate that would trigger safety oversight by the Department of Homeland Security.

Fertilizer plants are supposed to report to Homeland Security when they hold 400 pounds or more of the explosive material.

But filings with the Texas Department of State Health Services shows the plant had 270 tons of ammonium nitrate.

That information was not shared with homeland security according to the report.

And it's not clear whether firefighters and other first responders were aware of the amount of the chemical when they were dispatched to the plant.

By the way ammonium nitrate is the same chemical that was used in the Oklahoma City bombing by Timothy McVeigh.
What the hell does DHS have to do with operational planning of private industry? Answer: Takeover of ALL authority!!!

And people wonder why some of us bail on this shit.

        • From what I was reading, DHS is then required to come in and perform annual safety inspections.

That's all well and good. Who has the right buffer zone? 100 yards, a mile? 20 miles? Sometimes you can't stop it. Oh and then the city will nuke it when the realize all the tax revenue they are missing when they are out of residential space.

Either way, people will move in anywhere. Do you remember Garland Public Shooting Range taking heat? People actually moved in DOWN RANGE from there and had the audacity to complain. (Point being, that people will move anywhere - but we all have a choice on choosing our "buffer" from these things)

              • Just wanted to update that Westboro IS in West. Here's the facebook page for the anti-protestors

I liked this question on the page:

We had a question tonight after the meeting. We would like to ask that even if you have a license to carry a concealed weapon you DO NOT bring it.

                        • Call me crazy, but despite some notion of safety, who in the right mind would live next to a fertilizer plant?

                          So unimaginably sad

You make a solid point on both.

This is the thing, people will move into the area and not give a fuck until something happens. Same with Frisco and the Exide battery plant. They were there years before the city expanded. Then people are bithing that its unsafe and kids are being born with health issues, well no shit, your living next to a company that uses caustic chemicals, like they didn't do their research before they move in next door to those giant stacks.
