It's an old plant... No zoning or oversight when alot of that was built I would imagine.

        • I have a sick feeling at day break the damage is going to be extensive. West is such a nice little city, I do business with Greg may Chevrolet there. It seems from the photos that the plant was on the north side of the city?

            • Apparently there was a small fire, the fire dept showed and was putting it out and apparently the water hit the AA and then there was the explosion.

                • According to the mayor of West earlier at the press conference the fire started sometime around or just before 7pm and that the entire plant was in flames BEFORE the massive explosion. From what we felt here in Red Oak I thought a train had derailed coming into town or something else close by...that was pretty shocking

You know...I just had a bad thought on that....if there are storms moving in to the area in the morning with heavy rain and lightning....what if the storms create another explosion risk?

Last I read, they're hoping the rain will help with the fires...but the wind wouldn't.

I'm pretty sure the rain would be an issue as far as contamination goes.

                          • I just talked to a friend that I worked with near West, he is a Police Officer and on scene. He stated Many dead. I won't post the rough number he gave me, but he did say he found many dead himself. Of course this is obvious for anyone who has watched the news. Just can't believe it. Rip to those who lost their lives.

That is terrible. Events like this make me glad sometimes that I did not go into law enforcement...things like this would be very tough to see and deal with as a first responder. If anything good could ever come from an accident like this..it would be to change the restrictions on where and how close to schools and residences facilities such as this can be located. If this had occurred earlier in the day...they could be dealing with hundreds of dead schoolchildren and educators from the middle school that was practically blown to shreds from the explosion and fire.
