It has nothing to do with the 1911 being the reason the guys got shot in the hand. It's the possibility that a hand shot might not allow me to depress the grip safety (it did them). I don't want to have an issue with a grip safety hindering me shooting the motherfucker back

If you can't grip a pistol enough to depress a grip safety you aren't going to be able to shoot any gun.

Seen several CCW/personal defense shootings involving 1911 style pistols that resulted in hits to the shooting hand, and the operator not being able to discharge the firearm because of the grip safety not being fully engaged.

Is it common? No, 25% is only 1 in 4. However, it's also highly unlikely I will ever get involved in a firefight. Should that situation arise, suddenly 25% seems like a HUGE number if more than 1 bullet come flying my way.

And that's why I practice shooting with my "other" hand. I actually practice dumping the magazine and releasing the slide with my weak hand as well. Now racking the slide one handed is something I'm terrible at but I try to practice that as well. I try and do this at home though because it just looks plain stupid doing that at the range

But good points, if people aren't aware of the limitations of the firearms and there capabilities to deal with certain unique situations, shit can happen.

In fairness....I bought a used phone on Craigslist on Saturday and met the kid INSIDE the Sprint store at Illinois and Westmoreland (kinda in the hood)....but I did have my CCW on me.

Always have a gun. Always have a loaded and chambered gun. Always be prepared to use it. What is the saying? Smile and be polite but have a plan to kill anyone you meet? Craigslist encounters in the hood should amplify all the above.

I've actually had that happen. Well it happened to my nephew the first time he shot my .45 XD. Couldn't figure it out and took a few minutes to see what he was doing.

Please enlighten me how you can not depress the grip safety on a 1911 yet still have enough grip to shoot any pistol. I can understand a XD with the real thin grip safety but not a 1911.

Ah, that makes more sense.

For a similar reason I worry about carrying strong side in general. Not sure I would like cross draw, but at least I could get to it with either hand, in case my right is incapacitated.
