FORT WORTH -- One man is dead on the scene and another hospitalized with minor injuries following an apparent attempted robbery and shooting outside a Fort Worth business in southeast Fort Worth, according to MedStar officials said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. in the 4700 block of Wichita Street.

Matt Zavadsky, a MedStar spokesman, said based on the preliminary information from the 911 call and MedStar crews on the scene, the shooting occurred after an apparent sidewalk robbery attempt outside the Metro PCS store.

The victim targeted in the robbery was reportedly a concealed handgun license holder who had his handgun with him, Zavadsky said.

"He took out his gun and he shot the alleged perpetrator in the chest several times," Zavadsky said he was told by paramedics.

Zavadsky said the alleged robbery victim suffered in a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm in the shooting though it was unclear whether he had been shot by the suspected robber, who reportedly had a gun, or whether he may have shot himself "in the melee."

He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for treatment of his injuries, Zavadsky said.

At about 1 p.m., the two men met outside a Metro PCS store in the 7400 block of Wichita Street. After a confrontation, both the suspect and victim were shot.

The robbery suspect, 20-year-old Desmond Paige, was killed.

Kim Kirkland, who came upon the scene after the shooting, didn't know Paige or what he allegedly did, but she knelt beside him as he died on the asphalt.

"I just let him know somebody's here with you," she said. "You're not by yourself."

The other man was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and police say he's in good condition. It's not clear whether he was shot by Paige or if he accidentally shot himself. He has not been identified.

Witnesses say the intended victim had a concealed handgun license.

Police are investigating at least one other Craigslist robbery in the area.

one instance is a kid was on the trail that links some houses to this store and was throwing rocks at passing cars and when we made a quick stop they hauled ass into the nearby neighborhood.
