  • Picked up a new project

My dad gave me this old stand up radio today. I thought it would make a fun project. Refinish the outside and keep the vintage look. For internals I would like to update it with decent speakers and mp3 capabilities. It is going to need a good bit of work. The legs are part of the cabinet and they are pretty well shot. I spent part of the afternoon disassembling and cleaning it up. A lot of thr veneer was coming off, so it was all pulled off. I am thinking a dark stain on the main cabinet and a lighter stain on the center section.

Thats the plan. I have an old stereo I am going to canibalize for parts. I am looking for some suitable knobs for volume and on/off

Does anyone have a good online resource for tube amps? Yrs, I am very aware of the voltage dangers.

I am not real sure. I am going to strip it off and see what it looks like. Try some test stain in places and see how well it matches. I have most of it stripped down to bare wood at this point.

Where I stopped today. I think with a dark stain the top wont look to bad.

Still a bit of cleaning up to do before I stain it. Is there a good dremel attachment to clean up the molding and those grooves on the front?

Do what I did in my hot tub area. Buy an automotive radio with CD and MP3 hook ups. Some have a slot for SD cards and memory sticks. Mine has all three and I paid about $100.00 for it. You will need a pretty good AC/DC power supply. I got mine off E Bay for about $30.00. I used external speakers mounted in the ceiling of my hot tub gazeebo. You can mount good speakers in the original speaker hole and cover the area with speaker cloth. That is an easy deal. Mount the controls so they come out the side or maybe out of the back so as not to deface the cabinet. The unit I have even has a remote. You just have to be able to load the CD or stick. I even mounted an aoto antenna so I could listen to AM/FM radio. You could mount your antenna on the back, or get an after market power antenna and have it come out whe you go to the radio. Did I say "James Bond" ???? It's looking good so far.

Does it have to be sanded down? Isn't there some kind of spray you can use and wipe off?

I think I am going to go with the tube amp set-up. There are add on cards/circuits to allow the to work via blue tooth. I will probably go pretty basic on this one. Tube amp with an input for mp3.

After some work this morning, this is where I am at.

The center pieces are like the top. They had a veneer that was shot. I am hoping with another application of stain, I can even these pieces and the top.

The final two issues are the legs and the piece along the bottom. I think I can re-laminate the piece on the bottom. The legs will get shortened and new feet.

I wish I had gone a shade or two lighter. I lost a bit of the grain in the pieces on the sides. I used dark walnut. I wish I had used red mahogony. At any rate, for my first in depth refinishing project, I feel it is turning out well.

I have been looking at tube amp stuff and it looks like it can't be done for less than $100 easily. So, for now, I am going to tear apart my home stereo unit and retro fit it into the cabinet. I hope to have this pretty well finished tomorrow
