  • Hawking predicts humans will not last 1000 years with out leaving Earth.

"Stephen Hawking, who spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, is urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake.

The 71-year-old Hawking said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

The British cosmologist made the remarks Tuesday before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Hawking was diagnosed with the neurological disorder 50 years ago while a student at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depressed and initially didn’t see a point in finishing his doctorate. But he continued to delve into his studies.

“If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,” he said."

I don't think we'd make it another 500 years with the way we have been cutting our space programs budget. During the 1950's - 1970's it was one of the top priorities of both Russia and the US to explore many different regions of our galaxy. Now we've made so many cuts, that we're having to get taxi rides to the ISS with the very people we competed against just a few decades ago. Who knows what we could achieve if we got back to the 50's mindset of trying to see where else can we go in our solar system. We might even find the origins of where that damn cowskin rug came from!

That's a pretty easy assumption. We are going to eventually run out of resources.

Interesting video. With Russia now talking about an unmanned probe to the Moon by 2015 and then a manned mission in the mid 2020's, will that spark our officials to also send something else back? I've read they have said no at the moment, but once those crazy Russians start talk of building a small infrasctructure there I'm sure we'd rethink our plans.

If only we could get our hands on one of these "Time Machines", we would know for sure. Lmao.

"Ali Razeghi, a Tehran scientist has registered "The Aryayek Time Traveling Machine" with the state-run Centre for Strategic Inventions.

The device can predict the future in a print out after taking readings from the touch of a user, he told the Fars state newsagency.

Razaeghi, 27, said the device worked by a set of complex algorithims to "predict five to eight years of the future life of any individual, with 98 percent accuracy".

As the managing director of Iran's Centre for Strategic Inventions, Razeghi is a serial inventor with 179 other inventions listed under his own name. "I have been working on this project for the last 10 years," he said.

"My invention easily fits into the size of a personal computer case and can predict details of the next 5-8 years of the life of its users. It will not take you into the future, it will bring the future to you."

Razeghi says Iran's government can predict the possibility of a military confrontation with a foreign country, and forecast the fluctuation in the value of foreign currencies and oil prices by using his new invention.

"Naturally a government that can see five years into the future would be able to prepare itself for challenges that might destabilise it," he said. "As such we expect to market this invention among states as well as individuals once we reach a mass production stage."

Razeghi said his latest project has been criticised by friends and relatives for "trying to play God" with ordinary lives and history. "This project is not against our religious values at all. The Americans are trying to make this invention by spending millions of dollars on it where I have already achieved it by a fraction of the cost," he said. "The reason that we are not launching our prototype at this stage is that the Chinese will steal the idea and produce it in millions overnight."

Not to be a debbie downer, but humans won't last another 1000 years under any circumstances.

No one really knows what the peak population is or when it will hit, but it will be sooner rather than later before the so called Malthusian catastrophe happens. Estimates are between 9-13 billion people, so this could happen within 35 years. A contraction won't be stomached easily, there will be starvation that leads to war and disease, with massive amounts of population being eliminated for the "greater good" in an effort to save the world.

The optimist suggest the Kardashev scale, which manifests with technological mastery, but I can't see humans going beyond level one, at least not our current levels of thinking, jealousy, anger, rage, desire and so forth. The masses are far too selfish to go "beyond" themselves.

                      In short, we're fucked.

I say less than 500, but more realistic 200. The world is getting more dangerous. I'm not talking a out N Korea. The Chinese are the one we need to watch out for. Nuclear war on a global scale is a very real concern in the near future.

Our planet isn't fragile, it's seen a lot of shit, humanity is fragile.

We'll bring an end to ourselves long before we do permanent damage to this planet.

Definitely will be a show, overpopulation is evident and the level of intelligence is dropping tremendously. I give it 200 max and fear we have seen the peak of humanity, well at least for this round anyways.
