  • Amazon Kindle owners

    Hi Guys,

I just got the small 3rd gen Kindle. So far I'm pretty impressed with this little device.

I just wanted to get opinions on a cover for this thing. A lot of folks are complaining about Amazon's unlit cover because it is supposedly causing Kindles to reboot or outright fail. Have any of you had that problem?

Also, any suggestions on where to buy a good cover at a reasonable price? The Amazon unlit cover is $35 and the lit cover is $60, which IMO is stupidly high.

I've had a few issues with mine, but had no idea it was attributed to the cover. There's a bungee cord on the cover, to keep it closed, and moving that around might be causing the issues. Thanks for the heads up!

There's an otterbox for it, but I have the unlit cover. It never gets covered that way, so you'd have to remember to turn it off. The cover normally turns it off, and some people have reported losing their place when that happens, but it hasn't happened to me. There may be something to adjust in the settings if it happens to you, I'm not sure.

I keep my Kindle in the bathroom next to the toilet. Welcome to the 21st century!

It isn't the bungee cord but the clips that secure it to the case that appear to be causing the issues. On the Lighted cover, those clips connect to electrical leads that power the light. But the funny thing is that the problems are with the Unlighted cover. The lighted cover seems to work fine.

I know you are a DIY type of guy so you might consider doing what I did. I stole the idea from here. Since I already had a CNC machine it was more fun to make then buy. Half priced books has a great nostalgia section to find books to cannibalize. Its perfect for protecting my kindle while travelling but easy to remove when I want to use it (I'm not a case kind of guy). I have lots of good pics but no where to host them.

I'm not sure why there needs to be a light at all. If you're going to read in the dark or a dimly lit room, there should be a switch you can toggle from white text with a dark background to black text on a light background. Guess that's either too easy or too much to ask for though.

Genius. I don't have a CNC but I know someone that does.. Of course I could just make a template and use a regular router with a bushing to get the same result.. Thanks for that idea. I'll look into it more..
