  • Bereavement discounts, Do airlines still do them?

My Grandmother passed yesterday, and I need to fly out for her funeral. Do any of you guys know if airlines still give discounts for that? I’m looking at tickets and its going to be over a grand.

Sorry for your loss. I think it was Southwest at least i know does, I want to say I may have used that to fly my mom and myself to my Grandfather's funeral last minute.

Last time I had to fly for a funeral bereavement fares were more expensive than what I booked online.

Just curious, where is the funeral? It was a little over a grand to fly home for Christmas, so 1,700 miles and holiday ass-rape rate. It's usually $5-600, and has been as low as $350. This is all round trip btw.

Thanks guys, It's not as heart wrenching as it could be. She's been slipping away for a long time. Hasn't known anyone, for years, and barely knew who she was. I had my last good talk with her about six years ago, shortly after she didn't know me anymore. It's almost a relief for her to finally be at peace. Back in 01 we lost my Grandpa fairly abruptly, and that was much harder. This is sad, yet not as crushing.
Thanks for the info, I'll call Southwast, and AA.

We have to Fly into Fargo, and drive over to Crookston Minnesota. We are just looking at one way tickets, and they are over $500 each.

Sometimes .... death is a welcomed relief, not only for those who are dying, but also for the surrounding family as well.

                    RIP Grandma....

Sorry to hear it, man. Alzheimer's is a bitch. Just went through the same thing with my grandmother. She hasn't been lucid for about 6-7 years, and passed away this fall.

I looked into it when my aunt passed last year. I would identify the flights available within your timeframe and call the airlines. Seems I found 3 or 4 that offered bereavement fares

I checked with American so far, A one way ticket is $590, and a round trip with bereavement fairs is $509.
Looks like we are going to be shelling out a bunch regardless, but that’s a pretty big cut.
At least I can distract myself from the grief with anger at the price of tickets! lol-ish
