Does being in the military make you better than others?

So day after day I hear and read online people saying they were in the military. Good for them, I commend their service. The more I read and hear about it I feel like these people are starting to use it as a crutch or some form of trying to be better than others. They bust out the "Im a wounded veteran" or "I served in 2 wars" all the time. I could be talking to a patients family member who is half dead and some guy needs to tell me that he was in the military and he is a wounded veteran and turn the conversation on himself. I dont care.

Reading on slickdeals about Home Depot deals and a guy got butt hurt people called him naive. Then he has to respond

... So I am not throwing a "fit", I am not 10 years old, I am a disabled veteran who went to war twice as a combat engineer pulling Convoy Security for The Teams, ...

Im sure I will be bashed being that I have not served in the military but if this sense of egotism or being conceited, it sure isnt a place for me. I dont run around telling people I work in healthcare and help save lives. No one cares. And just so you know, all of my uncles and my father served in the military. I get that it is a good structure and a good think you can do for others. I may still join by applying to the Army CRNA school and give them 8 years of my life...not 100% sure yet. These are the choices we make in life. Some people will go into the military and serve their entire life, some will be firefighters/police/EMS, and some will run Wall St.

Hey, I'm a veteran, but I don't talk about it a lot and it makes me feel awkward when someone thanks me for my service. I can't stand people that use it as a crutch, or a pedestal, it is a volunteer service after all. I do think that it provides interesting life experiences and a good foundation for discipline, but that is all in how someone uses the tools they are given.

When someone uses one attribute of their persona to self identify it annoys the hell out of me. Most typically you see this among police officers, military folks, homosexuals, A&M graduates, bankers, and lawyers. You are not solemnly your career, past identity, lifestyle, race, sexual orientation, appearance, nationality, or any other aspect of your life; You are the sum of all of these things.

lol.. we have a guy at work who is an RN like the rest of us. Everytime he signs his name he writes BSN, RN, CCRN, CMC. Really? Who cares?

I too hate it when people use it as a crutch or ask for a military discount everywhere they go. I don't remember seeing "freebies and discounts everywhere you go" in my enlistment contract.

I only bring it up when it pertains to the conversation at hand, like the thread about North Korea or this morning when a new guy at work mentioned in a conversation how hot it was in the Middle East. I don't think it makes me better or worse than anyone else, but it does bring a different perspective and set of experiences to certain topics.
