I shall finish the game, Doc.

Does being in the military make you better than others? well, it makes you better at killing people but i think that is about it.
My nephew was a Marine and all I hear is the same old bullshit every time i talk to him about how he is a vet, and how he should be getting discounts everywhere, blah blah blah. He has to wear a fucking shirt or hoodie with his squadron on it at all times. Drives me insane. (he is 24)
I finally lost my shit on him last week because he constantly complains about every little thing that is wrong but at the same time likes to act like a badass. He also loves to tell you that he is an expert at everything....and i do mean everything. An example of his bullshit "I shot a haji 750 yards away with an ACOG on my rifle. i stepped on 5 IED's (keep in mind he has zero scars), my platoon was known as the Ghosts cuz that is what the enemy said over the radio about us....etc etc etc.. He spent the night and after 24 hours of hearing his bullshit i snapped and drug him out back to my shop by his shirt collar and threw a set of boxing gloves at him. I proceeded to put on my wifes pink gloves so it would be even funnier after i fucked him up. He started crying and I couldnt get him to do a fucking thing. I started chewing his ass out about how the world doesnt owe him a fucking thing and that his 2 years in the Marines does not make him a special forces badass and that he needed to stop hiding behind his EGA and thinking the world owes him something. You will see this alot with the young guys in all branches of the military.
I have gotten to the point that I try my best to avoid letting people know I was a Marine because you then have to hear them tell you every story in the book about either a family member that was one or how they were going to be one...blah blah blah.
here is a picture that sums im my Marine Corps career perfectly
May God give us strength and courage in the time of our darkest hours.

I agree with the general sentiment of this thread. Does being in the military make you better than someone else? No. But I do think it can make you a better person. I try to avoid mentioning it as a qualifier unless it pertains to the discussion. The people who need to boast are often lacking in other fundamental areas that make a person better.
People join the military for a variety of reasons: sense of duty/service, to be allowed to shoot at people, to better themselves either through opportunities the military provides. For the most part, depending on how someone conducts themselves, I think these can all be noble reasons. However, there is also a large number who join the military simply because they can't get another job (seen a lot when numbers swell for war). For the most part, I can't stand these guys. They tend to lack work ethic, dedication, discipline. All things that service requires. I can't speak for other branches, but the Army needs to get better at getting rid of these guys. Commanders need to act more diligently and strongly to thin their ranks of dead weight.

Concur exclude in a lot of aspect, far from perfect that for sure - always has and always will be that way.
I think a difference could be too....when I joined there were no wars...etc and not a lot were enlisting. No one joined for glory and leadership always made it clear that those are the wrong reasons to enlist.
Speculation:
Younger enlistment guys may say they are joining for all the right reasons, but may actually expect something. I do not know if they still do this in basic...etc...etc, but for us they killed any of that thought in an efficient manner.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.
