Kaufman County DA Murderer Eric Williams Sentenced to Death

After hearing testimony on Tuesday about the glee Eric Williams took in killing Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McClellend, McClellend's wife, Cynthia, and assistant prosecutor Mark Hasse, a Rockwall County jury decided Wednesday morning that Williams should be killed by Texas.

Williams was convicted of Cynthia McClellend's murder on December 4. His lawyers didn't mount a strong defense, hoping instead to save Williams' life in the trial's penalty phase. Witness after witness was called from the depths of Williams' past, all meant to humanize the man special prosecutors painted as a monster.

After all that, it was one of the last witnesses, called by prosecutors for rebuttal, that resonated the most. Williams' estranged wife admitted guilt for taking part in the crimes, but said her husband was the shooter. She shared his anger, she said, over Hasse's prosecution of Eric Williams for stealing Kaufman County computer equipment. The murders were revenge the couple was happy to take.

The victims' families made sure he knew how they felt about the outcome.

"I hope you suffer in fear every day," Hasse's mother said in statement read to the court. "You are going to die and our family will be there to watch it happen."

                  McClellend's family was equally unequivocal.

"Pretty much the only thing I have to say is fuck you, Eric Williams," Cynthia McClellend's daughter Christina Foreman said.

Williams will spend the night in Kaufman County before being transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Polunsky Unit death row tomorrow.

                  • Yup, he pretty much killed those people in cold blood. He was the one caught stealing and even if he wasn't and it was a staged political revenge, he should have never given anyone any just cause to fire him.

                    • I've heard some details from someone who had a little bit of inside knowledge (IT Guy associated with Kaufman County). What's crazy is that this whole deal started over a single computer and 2 monitors. Supposedly Williams had gotten verbal permission from some other source, to take his work machine home b/c he was having to work from home more often due to his wife's illness....but he made the mistake of not documenting that permission in writing.

It's been said that there was some political motive to have him removed from his office, due at least in some part to how much time off he was taking in relation to his wife's illness, and also insurance costs associated with the same. However, simply firing the guy isn't an easy option when they're dealing with an electoral office, and moves to do-so could also lead to repercussions through FMLA, since his excuse for slacking on the job was in direct relation to a sick family member. Therefore, they needed another hard-pressed reason to get rid of the guy....and what better reason than convicting him of a crime? It's also been said that-that goal was driven from McClelland, through Hasse. If you do some reading, there were a lot of opinions that those two seemed to take the prosecution efforts against Williams to an extreme, even slandering the guy's name in publications. All for having a computer and 2 monitors at his house that were property of the county...it was even confirmed that he was indeed using them, not trying to hide them, or resale them, or anything of the sort. But he did not have any form of written permission to remove the equipment from his county office.

While I certainly do not condone or agree in any way with Williams actions here, I also do not believe that McClelland and Hasse were just innocent targets, as they are being made out to be. I think that they misused their positions by manipulating (or leveraging) the law to satisfy some sort of personal and/or political vendetta with this guy....and they simply fucked with the wrong guy. Did they deserve to die for it?...hell no!

Williams clearly has some deep-rooted mental issues, and combining that with a sudden desperation and feeling as though it was the end of the line for his career, marriage, life....a recipe for disaster....just like the disaster that unfolded with this tragic story.

In the end no-one wins in this case....unless of course the things about McClelland and Hasse are true, then perhaps it would seem that karma won over all 3.

I've always wondered how long he would have gotten by with it if he had stopped at just killing Mark Hasse....if you recall, the authorities basically had no idea where to look until the other 2 murders happened. On the other hand, I also sort of thought that he wanted to get caught for it, b/c he actually wanted some sort of credit for killing those guys. The guy was clearly off his rocker.

                      • Agreed^^

The story above as related by Jason coincides nearly identically to what we've heard
through other "inside the Kaufman County Courthouse" sources that frequent my wife's practice in Kaufman.

A terrible story with no winners in the end.
