  • Travelling internationally - cell phone

I will be travelling overseas shortly and wanted to see what the options were for cell phone plans. It will only be for 1-2 weeks but I am sure I will have some business calls and emails I will have to take care of. What have y'all done?

When i am in Dubai, I just use a Dubai simm card in an unlocked phone. I call home all the time from Afghanistan on my Afghan simm and it is not too bad. If I had to get an itemized bill for usage vs topping it off with units I may think otherwise though.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I got screwed on keeping my cell phone on in Bermuda. What I do now is use my ipad/iphone tied with Google Voice. All I need is an internet connection (free wifi) and I'm set.

My wife spent a few weeks in Australia and we had her plan changed to an international plan. It didnt help much, she didnt have service for most of the trip, but both of our phones got international service, and when I was in germany did a lot of calling and texting and didnt see a huge difference in our bill.

Do this, you'll get hit with roaming fees no matter what you do if you use a us carrier overseas.

What carrier and phone do you have?

Just buy a prepaid once you get there. Or take a smart phone and use wifi to skype.

Try to get an unlocked phone and buy a prepay simm card where you are going. To me that has been the cheapest way.

When do you leave? If you want a cheap unlocked international phone, I can give you a spare drop phone. Just pick up a simm card and minutes when you land where ever you are going.

On my trip to Canada last year, I upgraded my plan for international calls, text, and data. They told me calls were $.07/minute, I think. It would up being ridiculously more, my phone seemed to work fine, but my wife's phone, which I turned off data roaming while on the plane at DFW, still cost a fortune because turning this off did nothing

It cost me roughly $800 extra for 5 days, but we did get it talked down somewhat.

Listen to the advice above, and get an unlocked phone/prepaid SIMM...or grab your ankles.

I think his point is that the fish got low balled, fucked in the catfish asshole and you paid half price. The worst part was the fish explaining to his fish friends why his asshole smelled like redneck

Last year the fiance and I did a around the world trip. I found thebest way was using sSkype and wifi. It's $.02 / min and you can call from anywhere with wifi. If we needed to call home we could always wait until we got back to the hotel.

It's what I did when I went to Italy, France, U.K., and Greece.

I still have the phone (if you want to take it with you) and the minutes were purchased Sept. of last year so they may still be good. It is a quad band so it probably works everywhere.

I mainly bought it because Greece looked pretty rough and since European countries are all sheep, I obviously couldn't take my 'Merican .45
