That is nice Keith, keep adding into it, good story for grandkids. Haha. I was planning on proposing to her on the white cliffs of Dover. That is the first weekend we spend together as friends, then it escalated quite quickly. Two years later and after knowing her for six years. Here we are.

One of my analysts just paid $27k for a 3.0 ct princess cut stone and ring from a jeweler in New York. He has him a University Park girl on the hook and she has high standards. I told him he is fucking crazy. She is a nice girl and her dad is filthy rich so it may be an investment for him.

I don't know if this is the proper place on the forum but I was wondering for all the married folk what a good size of karat diamond is for an engagement ring?

I was planning on getting something for my future fiancee, but I get stuck on what size rock, and budget. Usually under $1,000.00 White gold preferred, I was looking at Zales for a bridal set? Da fuq confusing shieeet.

Well, for a grand, you don't get to do much selection on stone. Around this level, a new setting will cost more than the stone.

Since you won't be getting much diamond, go for a setting that carries more impact, and get a stone with better color. Cut and clarity won't do much compared to the color, in this size level and price level, so go middle of the range with cut and clarity.

Later on, when the budget gets goosed higher the diamond will start taking on some size and start to well exceed the cost of the setting.
Then, you can start making choices in the 4 C's(with a somewhat fixed 5th C "cost" ).

Don't forget that when women get together and compare rings, every woman wants her ring to stand out in some way. Diamond color tends to be the first thing to compare, then performance(sparkle), then usually size.
Woman of the same cohort will generally have about the same size stone.
A fancy cut is also a way to stand out, but be wary of proportions.

So who has the best cheap diamond site? The ring is picked out and the financee's ring will hold round or radiant. She decided she liked the radiant. The ring holds about 1 carat. Range probably from .95 to 1.1. Best I've seen so far is brilliance.com as far as pricing. Would I do better off online or at a local diamond shop? I found a nice stone at the place where I bought the ring and it turned out to be $7700. I'm like "fuck that!". I'm think of the best stone I can get for about $2500.

Im not joking when I type this, my ol lady already has the ring picked out at Tiffany's with a price tag just over 10k. She said I am not to propose until I have that exact ring.

We've been together for 6 years and I have not proposed.....

its all about clarity.. hell my wife's ring is a little over half a karat and it was 3500 for just the platinum band and ring, I already had the stone.. I got a nicer band and ring so I can put a bigger rock in it later on down the road. but it honestly looks great with the smaller diamond. it shines and sparkles nice. I'm a poor college student though. no chooo chooo money.

Well it turns out the ring was perfect. As I got a whole night of fun after I gave it to her. She loves her $400 engagement ring and our €360 wedding bands also worked awesome. I got it all for under a grand.

A good value is where ever you can find it.

Just use a couple of difference sources for pricing info and comparison, as possible.

I've used different sources to get stones, when I'm looking and my criteria is matched, and the relative pricing works to my advantage.

Brick and mortar stores have rarely been used by me to buy a stone. They sell commercial material, and the buying public is not an informed actor.

One time I found a stone in a showcase with the GIA cert, but the stone was chipped under a corner. The cert was older than the damage, and did not reflect it. A well known name store, trying to move a 2 carat damaged item.

It can be wild in the market, it's best to become a bit knowledgeable on things that you spend big bucks on.

What you guys need to understand is that the ring doesn't reflect the type of person she is but instead the person who bought it.

Obviously everyone has different circumstances when their time comes to purchase a ring and that has to be taken in to consideration. Buy the nicest ring you can afford when you are buying. I can assure that EVERYONE looks at the ring and they might say "Oh, that is beautiful", but if its a cheap ring they are really saying in their head, "your boyfriend is a cheap fuck" Just stating the FACTS.
