  • Should've gone to a pawn shop. I sell 1/2ct solitaires as low as $250.

Never go to a large jewelry store unless you just enjoy taking it in the butt. a $4000 ring at Zales is going to run $900-1300 in my store. Markup is a bitch.

    • found the ring at robin brothers then bought it at since1910.com. they sell diamonds and settings. they were a couple of grand cheaper then the box store but i had to wait for the ring to actually be made by the designer (simon g) so that took like a month.

here is a picture a buddy of mine took of it. 1.1 carat main diamond, then whatever in small diamonds. the wedding band looks exactly the same just no big diamond on it.

I bought my wife's ring when I was in the Army and it about killed me - $634 total for the engagement and wedding set. It was 1/3 carat round diamond with some gold saddle type setting with 8 tiny diamonds.

She wore it for 10 years and called me in tears one day that the main diamond fell out at work. About 5 of her coworkers and her were looking for hours and never found it. I told her it wasn't a real big deal, we would replace the diamond, but it hurt her a bit.

I have known what kind of ring she wanted over the years, and under the guise of replacing the stone, I let her try on a few others. Wound up getting her a 1.2ct oval diamond in a white gold cathedral setting with a matching band with 10 diamonds, signifying our 10th.

I'll replace this one as well at 20, if she's lucky....

My wife's is very similar. The wedding band looks the same with a slight curve to fit around the center stone. I bought from a small jeweler in Fort Worth that brokers their diamonds.

          • I went through Robbins Brothers, had them match the price at Blue Nile and ordered the band through Tacori. Was able to walk into the store if anything happened, cleanings, loose stones, purchase price counted towards an upgrade if trading in the diamond for something bigger etc.

we will see how college goes. I plan on marrying if everything goes right, but a few years after college. We will have been dating seven years when we graduate. I can't say enough good about her. She is only a little crazy, she loves to shoot anything that goes bang, loves to fish, loves to go out to the dragstrip, and doesn't like her steak cooked well done. I'm happy.

              • $1k doesn't seem like enough for a halfway decent ring, and $10k sounds cheap for anything from a Tiffany store.

I'll be buying a ring in the not-so-distant future, and I have been figuring that $10k is about the number it takes for something decent. If I'm wrong, then that's fucking great! My old lady isn't very materialistic, but at the same time, I have spent way more than that on my toys over the years, so if I cheap out on her ring, it would be a slap in the face. Besides, she's out of my league.

Personally, I think putting so much value on a stone is stupid, and I think marriage is an unnecessary tradition, but I'm all about making her feel like a princess, so I'll play along with that in mind.

How much younger than you is she? I had been dating my girlfriend for 4 years and then she started pushing to move in together and start a family and whatnot. We did not last long after that conversation happened.

                  • They all like to do things that you like while dating. After you get married you figure out what your in for.

                    • Just go for a couple months worth of income for your budget and call it a day. A big cloudy stone that doesn't refract light and sparkle will always look worse than a smaller one that can be seen across the room. Go for quality before upping the carat size.

We are the same age. She already has hinted at moving in, but she knows I ain't having it for a few more years.
