I bought my wife's ring when I was in the Army and it about killed me - $634 total for the engagement and wedding set. It was 1/3 carat round diamond with some gold saddle type setting with 8 tiny diamonds.

She wore it for 10 years and called me in tears one day that the main diamond fell out at work. About 5 of her coworkers and her were looking for hours and never found it. I told her it wasn't a real big deal, we would replace the diamond, but it hurt her a bit.

I have known what kind of ring she wanted over the years, and under the guise of replacing the stone, I let her try on a few others. Wound up getting her a 1.2ct oval diamond in a white gold cathedral setting with a matching band with 10 diamonds, signifying our 10th.

I'll replace this one as well at 20, if she's lucky....

found the ring at robin brothers then bought it at since1910.com. they sell diamonds and settings. they were a couple of grand cheaper then the box store but i had to wait for the ring to actually be made by the designer (simon g) so that took like a month.

here is a picture a buddy of mine took of it. 1.1 carat main diamond, then whatever in small diamonds. the wedding band looks exactly the same just no big diamond on it.

Should've gone to a pawn shop. I sell 1/2ct solitaires as low as $250.

Never go to a large jewelry store unless you just enjoy taking it in the butt. a $4000 ring at Zales is going to run $900-1300 in my store. Markup is a bitch.

I spent more than I should have, but she'd never had anything and I'd never been in a position to give anything. It's worth more than I paid because it's all platinum. I also got a certified center stone.

I now pay no attention to certs. If it looks good to the naked eye, I'm all over it.

For our wedding/ honeymoon, I got her a stuffed animal and put a pair of diamond studs in its ears.

Her pendant is my favorite because it's only .86ct, but it looks bigger than a lot of 1ct stones due to the cut.

all of her diamonds are princess cut because that's the fly shit

I would suggest somewhere like Dallas Gold or jewelry exchange before a big box store.

I love mine, 2 tone with Rose gold. Plat is great but it's heavy and the metal is soft and scratches.

We got married really young, a long time ago, and didn't have much money at all. New cars were the same price as some of these rings you guys are talking about. We wanted a house and other things that were more of a priority than a ring. After we were married several years, we upgraded her rings substantially. It meant more to her and it didn't take as big a bite out of our finances. If you have the means, spend away. On the other hand, if she's making a huge deal out of diamond sizes and you're financing a $10k ring, it's down hill from here.

While I spent more than I wanted to on my first wife's ring, you might want to reconsider your budget. You don't have to break the bank, but you're not going to get anything nice for that price. Cut & Clarity > carat size. You'll also get more for your money with an odd carat size. 1 carat is going to be more expensive than 1.12 or .97, for instance. At least in my experience that held true.
This was true when I bought one. Clarity always trumps size and you will rarely find a non lab created diamond that has exceptional clarity with no imperfections when you do it is gonna outrageously expensive.
