Chooooo$$$$$$ Chooooooo$$$$$$$$$
While I spent more than I wanted to on my first wife's ring, you might want to reconsider your budget. You don't have to break the bank, but you're not going to get anything nice for that price. Cut & Clarity > carat size. You'll also get more for your money with an odd carat size. 1 carat is going to be more expensive than 1.12 or .97, for instance. At least in my experience that held true.

I told my wife to show me what she wanted cause she isn't getting any "upgrades" later on down the road.
Ended up being just under 5k by the time I bought the stone and got it set. I believe it appraised for nearly 20k for insurance reasons to my shock.

Fiux, I haggled for hours in the gold suk in Dubai after reading for several days on what to look for and what to pay. My wife got a really nice ring and I got the memories of making the selection. Put thought into it and you won't regret taking the easy route of letting the Jared's sales guy talk you into something just to close a deal and move you on to the register.
short story, diamond and marriage related: I came home from Afgh to get married etc. The day I arrived I wanted to buy her a nice pair of diamond earrings to wear in the wedding and to have as an early Christmas gift. I picked out what I wanted, paid cash and handed them to my mother. We were married on the 20th of December. She let my wife wear them under the guise that they were my great grandmothers and would be her "something borrowed". After the wedding my wife handed them back to my mother who slipped them to me. On our honeymoon cruise a week later it was Christmas morning. I put the earrings into a ring box from a piece we bought the first day of the cruise "you can't have it till Christmas morning though". When she opened it expecting the ring from the shop it was the diamonds from the wedding. After explaining all this to her she hasn't gone a day without wearing them since. One day, the diamonds will get removed and set next to the stone in the engagement ring. New bigger diamonds will replace the earrings but the ring serves as a story piece in our history together, engagement, marriage, gifts, etc. As you get older you will want to upgrade but never loose the first diamond in the new sets.

When I bought my fiance her ring, I decided to got for quality. I went with a 3/4 carat princess solitaire. If you look at it under magnification, it is near flawless with light going through it in all the right areas. Also it looks small (since it is cut right, and is a deep diamond, not a flattened one to look bigger). She gets stopped probably once or twice a week by other women to complement her ring since it sparkles so much. Her cousin got engaged the other day, had a princess cut that was 1/2 carat, and looked bigger and was bragging about that she had a bigger diamond. Her fiance stated he paid $500 for it..... I just sat back and laughed. To each his own. I think you should at least pay 1 months salary on a ring.
