I just checked some diamond pricing on the web. Prices have moved up nicely from 4 to 5 years ago.
People are facinated by highly concentrated wealth.

good friend of mine is 3rd generation jewelry business...
Anyhow, one of my sister's ex-BF's dropped $100k+ on a ring with him. My buddy who I've known since kindergarten got the referral. His wife got to pick "anything in the store". Good times

Fiux, I haggled for hours in the gold suk in Dubai after reading for several days on what to look for and what to pay. My wife got a really nice ring and I got the memories of making the selection. Put thought into it and you won't regret taking the easy route of letting the Jared's sales guy talk you into something just to close a deal and move you on to the register.
short story, diamond and marriage related: I came home from Afgh to get married etc. The day I arrived I wanted to buy her a nice pair of diamond earrings to wear in the wedding and to have as an early Christmas gift. I picked out what I wanted, paid cash and handed them to my mother. We were married on the 20th of December. She let my wife wear them under the guise that they were my great grandmothers and would be her "something borrowed". After the wedding my wife handed them back to my mother who slipped them to me. On our honeymoon cruise a week later it was Christmas morning. I put the earrings into a ring box from a piece we bought the first day of the cruise "you can't have it till Christmas morning though". When she opened it expecting the ring from the shop it was the diamonds from the wedding. After explaining all this to her she hasn't gone a day without wearing them since. One day, the diamonds will get removed and set next to the stone in the engagement ring. New bigger diamonds will replace the earrings but the ring serves as a story piece in our history together, engagement, marriage, gifts, etc. As you get older you will want to upgrade but never loose the first diamond in the new sets.

3 words for you suckers:
Hearts and arrows.
I sacrificed a little weight to make sure my fancys ring isnt cloudy, included, and poorly cut/ polished.
Too many scrotes care about just weight. You'll see her ring from quite a distance because of the scintillation, and it's just slightly over a carat.

Mine got a blue center diamond and about 30 smaller white ones. It's nice but I've also had to get it repaired twice. Resizing is critical with the smaller stones. They ended up actually building the ring in the proper size and so far so good. Hey it worked, she said yes and now I'm on her insurance. Win/win
