  • What years did GM trucks have 6 lugs rears?

my 95 GMC C1500 4x4 had the whole rear replaced with a rear from a "little earlier year" truck, but the previous owner could not tell me what year. It is a little narrower than the original. I need to replace the axle bearings and seals bad and I hate to tear it down before I locate them.

Like I said, it is a 6 lug and supposedly this rear came from a 3/4 ton. Does anyone know if the bearings and seals changed from say 78 - 95 in those rear ends? I was thinking that GM stopped using the 6 lugs rears in the late 60's and didn't use them again until the 90's. This rear obviously is older than 95.

BTW, is there such a thing as a repair bearing or seal with an offset for cases where the axle shaft may have been grooved from the worn seal?

There should be a tag on the axle housing, and it should have the info you seek.

as far as i know all the way back to the 60's, the 4x4's have all been 6 lug. However in the 88-98 body style trucks they did make a "light duty" 3/4 ton that was 6 lug and 2wd. maybe this is the rear you have? I would get any numbers you can off of it and measure it and go on the chevy truck forum for your body style and see if anyone can id it.

the 73-87 3/4 ton trucks actually had 8-lug wheels, 5-lug on 2WD 1/2 tons, and 6-lug on some of the 1/2 ton 4x4's. I know for sure that 71-72 had 8-lug in a 3/4 ton and 5-lug in a 1/2 ton. 70' back were 6-lug in the 1/2 ton trucks.

I can't recall 100% sure, but I believe that 88'-92' were 6-lug in the 3/4 tons, 5-lug in the half tons, and then 93-98 were again 8-lug in the 3/4 ton, still 5-lug in the 1/2. They didn't start using 6-lug in the 1/2 tons again until 99'.

the 88-98 3/4 tons were 8 lug. the 6 lug 3/4 tons were usually ext cabs and i believe always with short beds. I believe it is the same 14bolt semi floater rear end in both 3/4 ton trucks, just a different lug pattern

edit: after a little googleing the 6 lug 3/4 ton has a 7200gvw and the 8 lug has a 8600 gvw . So it appears that the 6 lug 3/4 ton is a 1/2 ton with a 14 bolt rear and different springs id bet.

Is it a ten bolt?(you know holding the cover on)
I would thing that it might be a 73-87 from a 4x4 1/2 ton if it is narrower. With out a stamped number hard to tell. See if you can hit the tube with a wire brush and see if you can find any.
