Advice on a (possible) stolen Tv

So, a person I work with sent me an email saying that her friends husband bought a lot of TV's and was selling them cheap. Claimed he does this ever year and resales for a profit. Well he was selling a TV I wanted for $650 (cheapest I could find was $1000). So we exchange info and meet up. So the dude shows up, all tatted up and thugish looking with a TV that has no box. Just a power cord and a controller. It still had all the plastic protection crap on it, and looked new, but he said it wouldn't fit in his truck with the box. At this point I think it's probably stolen, but he assured me it wasn't. I gave him money and he left. Afterwards I noticed the serial # plate was torn off.. So my question is, what now?

Considering the deal is already done, and the TV has nothing making it identifiable, I don't think there's really anything you can do. The time to do something would have been prior to actually exchanging cash for it. And even then the most I would do would be to walk away from the deal. I mean, even if it is actually stolen what are you supposed to do? Call random police agencies and tell them you think it's stolen, then tell them that it has no serial number for them to actually try and figure out where it was stolen from?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's cool to go out and knowingly buy stolen shit, but at this point I don't see another option.

At most, MAYBE you could call the dude back and see if you can get your money back in exchange for the TV, and wash your hands of the deal. But I doubt he'd be willing to do that, and I wouldn't want to have further interaction with him if he is a thug / thief.

I wasn't comfortable with any of it. I had the guy meet me at my house since I don't have a car that something like that would fit in, and he was a friend of a coworker. I was uneasy the whole time, and didn't want to back out of the deal ( he had to drive 30 something miles ) and have him come back and fuck with my house or something.

Probably cargo theft. Even with no serial number DPD could probably tell you if a cargo truck got jacked and they were missing a bunch of TV's from somewhere. There is also a website online they can check where big ticket items are listed if missing nationwide I believe.
