      • 1995 and older vehicles that were originally manufactured with a TAC system are required to have a closed-type air cleaner/filter system to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions during cold engine operation. All the components must be in place in order to pass the visual emissions component inspection, which is part of the annual safety inspection.

The TAC system consists of the enclosed air cleaner/filter assembly and a heat shroud at the exhaust manifold and then there is also a heat duct hose that connects from the heat shroud to the air cleaner assembly. Also, some of the TAC systems had a fresh air duct hose that attached from the front or side of the air cleaner assembly to either the front or side of the vehicle. If your vehicle came equipped with a TAC system and if it was removed and replaced with an open-type design air filter/intake assembly, the vehicle will fail the visual emissions component inspection.

          • Since I don't have the car any more who knows what it has. It was a 78, older than 84 doesn't need cats. I never inspected the car tho.

                • If installed as original equipment by the manufacturer, the catalytic converter will be considered a part of the exhaust emission system on all 1984 and later model vehicles. It will be inspected as a part of the exhaust system on prior to 1984 model vehicles.

The catalytic converter will be considered as a part of the exhaust system on all vehicles prior to 1984 year model and will be inspected only visually (if present) for leakage. On 1984 and later model light truck and passenger vehicles, the catalytic converter will be checked for presence and leakage. Flexible tubing which meets the requirements listed below may be used anywhere in the exhaust system.

Only one reason to delete the tread but since it would just get brought back there's no reason

                        deleting the tread?

                        h. Any tire without tread wear indicators worn so that less than 2/32 (1/16) of an inch of tread design depth remains when measured (with a tread depth gauge) at the lowest points in any two adjacent major grooves in the center or middle of the tire.

                        • Older than 1984 will be inspected visually (if present). So 1978 doesn't need them. It didn't have tailpipes normally tho.

But you admit that you removed the federally mandated emissions equipment, and either did take the vehicle to be inspected without said emissions equipment or drove it without an inspection...
