  • People aren't really...

Out looking to get hired. I have two or three people come in each day for applications. 1/3 have their TWC log sheet with them and look like they have never even seen a cowboy in their life (I am retail management in western wear), 1/3 of what is left come in when the store manager isn't here, he does all of the hiring, and I tell them "the store manager isn't here, he will be here at xyz day and time, you should bring it back then because he makes all of the hiring decisions. The final third come in looking like some damn backwoods hillbillies, overalls cut off shirts and flip flops. We get VERY few applicants who present themselves well.

I was taught to always dress like you wanted the job, better over dressed than under dressed. My dad preached that to me when I was younger.

I left a part out. Referring to telling people when to bring their application/resume back. The guy across the counter essentially tells you the best way to get hired on at the company you kust asked to apply for and you ignore him. 90% of people who I tell them they should bring the app back while the store/hiring manager is here do not listen, they fill it out, hand it to me and leave

My dad tells me the same thing. I have no idea why people making almost no money can stand themselves. No, I don't have a current job that I could support myself without a doubt with, but at least I try and haul my own weight.

I always got "you arent hiring are you?"

        that was an automatic NO.

What the fuck do you expect in a retail setting? Someone with an MBA showing up in a three-piece suit, recommendation letters, application, and resume' in hand?

I see the TWC logs very often.

I am almost to the point of telling people up front when they show up to apply whether they should bother or not. I'd say an easy 90% of people aren't serious about it for some reason. The majority of the rest of them I wouldn't want working here anyways.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

What is the hourly wage? It always has to be directly related to the quality of folks that show up.

I will be on unemployment when I get let go here. If TWC is gonna require me to apply for $10 an hour jobs but I am not required to take anything less than 80% of my current income, I will be the guy in flip flops too for the jobs I don't really want.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Don't get me started. I've had people show up in pajama pants and slippers to interviews. Another Manager in my district had a guy bring his baby to an interview because he wanted " to show he was responsible."

I wouldn't bring a resume' to an interview for a retail position. I would however submit or already have submitted a properly completed application, dress neatly but not overdress in a 3-piece suit, and above all be polite. I would not bring a TWC log.

I am thinking of getting a PT job to pay some stuff off and I am fairly certain it isn't going to be hard to find something. people have no idea how to present themselves to future employers.

Sure are you looking to apply? We pay minimum wage and after 6 months being full time, we have an EXCELLENT health insurance package (one of the only reasons I have been thankful for this job over the last 18 months). No it is not every day that a degreed individual walks in the door looking for a job. But people should use the lump 3 feet above their ass for something other than absorbing reality TV. If the guy handing you the application recommends you should bring that application back to the person making the hiring/firing decisions, it is a pretty good indication that they could be hiring soon and that will Greatly improve your odds for an interview.

As for the 3 piece suit. No, I don't expect that in my line of work. Though it shouldn't be a big surprise for someone to come in appropriately dressed and cleaned up. Not like you just stepped out of a hog pen, and decided that you wanted a day job in retail, hopped in the truck still covered in shit and ask for an application

I applied for nothing but gm's and ceo, figured i might as well aim high while getting paid for it.

On a side note when I had a job but was actively looking I carried a nice pair of slacks and dress shirt and jacket in the car at all times for when then time arose.

A co-worker(in Info Tech) got laid off from my employer and I called him every week to check in with
him asking how things are going with the job hunt.

He told me he's not looking for a job, the unemployment benefits were too good.
At least, until they run out.

On the other hand, I know a few people who have been out of work for years, and finally realized that
they won't be able to get back into the job market where they were.
Some people I know have been pushed out of work in their 50's and the prospects are very slim.
50's and 60's are the working years that fund retirements.

So they are working for minimum wage, and have been beaten down.

The good economy is over for an entire generation, and severly limited for the younger generation.

Middle-age and middle class is the last holdout.

Retail that pays commission in a busy environment can pay well, especially during the holiday season. I beleive we have guys making 6-7k or more in November and December in some of our Metroplex stores
