No it is not every day that a degreed individual walks in the door looking for a job. But people should use the lump 3 feet above their ass for something other than absorbing reality TV. If the guy handing you the application recommends you should bring that application back to the person making the hiring/firing decisions, it is a pretty good indication that they could be hiring soon and that will Greatly improve your odds for an interview.

As for the 3 piece suit. No, I don't expect that in my line of work. Though it shouldn't be a big surprise for someone to come in appropriately dressed and cleaned up. Not like you just stepped out of a hog pen, and decided that you wanted a day job in retail, hopped in the truck still covered in shit and ask for an application

I was being sarcastic. I get your points, and I dress and prepare appropriately for interviews. The people you are seeing either just don't know any better/weren't taught any better, really aren't looking for anything but a signature on their TWC log sheet so they can keep collecting unemployment, or really are just that stupid. And you know what they say, you can't fix stupid.

What did you pay? The very short stint I had in the auto parts business we were starting counter guys out at $7.00 an hour.

Hasn't changed much. Entry level with no experience $8. I started at $7.50 in 1998.

I'd get up on a pole and shake it for $1000 a day...god damn!

I wouldn't expect much if you're paying minimum wage. Also, I wouldn't even accept applications on days the manager isn't there. However, I would tell a hot piece of ass to come back for a 2ND interview when the manager is there.

I think a lot of it depends on what job you are applying for. When I went to my interview at international truck, I was wearing a dark wash blue jean, a nice button down shirt, and a leather coat. It was cold outside, hence the leather coat. They chased me down after I left to tell me to expect the phone call that I got the job. That was just for a mechanic position, so I figured it was acceptable. If I were going to an interview to be a car salesman at a large lot, I would be dressed in my suit.

The final third come in looking like some damn backwoods hillbillies, overalls cut off shirts and flip flops. We get VERY few applicants who present themselves well.

I was taught to always dress like you wanted the job, better over dressed than under dressed. My dad preached that to me when I was younger.

Are you saying you're a cowboy because you dress like one? One of my idols says "Don't call him a cowboy until you see him ride."

Every job warrants a bespoke suit, custom french cuff shirt, highly polished italian leather shoes, and a Rolex.

Anything less means you really don't want the job............

No, not hardly. That Conway song is on our in store radio, funny you should throw that in there. I am far from a true Cowboy. I have been on horses done some work on a few ranches and farms, but I would call my self a wanna be at best. I have friends who ride rough stock and work ranches for a living. I do dress western, that is about as close as I can claim to be.

I didn't get unemployment benefits and I didn't go for any assistance. I started to learn the ins and outs of paintless dent repair. It's sucked because it's not a paid gig and I had zero experience in sales but it's really nice to be learning something new. After plenty of talks I know to first learn the business side, then learn the repair side.
