  • Mom lost her job of 27 years yesterday.

Downsizing and outsourcing. After that long you don't expect to see a parent having to look for work, especially at 55. I see it as a blessing in disguise because she's been very unhappy since the smaller company she worked for was bought out by a corporation of slave drivers a few years ago. Her work life was miserable and constantly stressing her out. I think the uncertainty and getting insurance at her age is what scares her the most, but the initial shock seems to be wearing off.
She worked for the same guy all these years doing insurance bonds and he's always been a big brother to her. Once they were bought out, they just kept getting squashed further and further and he didn't even know until after it was over with.

What kind of job is she looking for? I work for a mortage company with an office in Irving and i can see if there are any openings that are a fit. The company privides excellent benefits and pays a large portion of them.

Bummer man, sorry to hear it. Same thing happened to mine at nearly the same age. With her hearing problems she wasn't able to find a new job, but luckily my dad was only 2 years from retirement any way, so they didn't have much hardship over it at all. Hope she can work something out, it's the insurance crap that is scary these days.

At this point, she's not sure. I don't know if I'm using the proper terminology here, but basically she's done insurance bonds for company's that provide a service and need to be bonded for the service they provide. The guy she's been with for all these years maintained the client base and did the "selling" and she did the rest.

I appreciate the offer and I know she's willing to explore all possible options.

Yeah, at least she'll get to be closer to my sister and I and her grandkids. She's been lonely since moving and will most likely end up back here.

Good luck to your mom. It will be tougher to find a decent job with her age.

My wife got laid off after 25.5 years. These companies only care about the bottom line. They could care less about the individuals that are actually doing the work.

I'm sorry that happened to her. I'm afraid we will see more and more of this as the health-care costs' are piled onto businesses.

Thanks guys. That's exactly how the company she worked for operated. They sound like a bunch of real shit sipper's that only care about the bottom line. I remember how happy she was before they were bought out.

That sucks, but with all that experience hopefully she can find something she actually likes again too.
Thats a reason my Dad left UT Southwestern after working there 25 Years, just more and more BS as the years went on and the management got younger and less knowledgeable as it went on. He quit voluntarily, but im sure if he had stayed a year or two longer they would have fired him due to his age, having started drafting by hand and being forced into using Autocad(not that he couldnt do it well, just felt he lost the creativity of drawing by hand).

The days of people staying at companies for even 10+ years are slowly dwindling.

Sorry to hear it Jimmy. My father was not laid off, but it was only a matter of time before he would have been. He'd worked for the same company since 1990. So he took a job with a new company at 71. This was last year. Little over a year later, and the idea of it still scares the shit out of him. Best of luck to her!
