Mesquite police say the bodies of four people were found inside a home four days after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire.

Police officials told NBC 5 officers were called to a home on the 1400 block of Paintbrush Street at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday when someone reported hearing gunfire. When officers arrived, they reported nothing unusual and no signs of forced entry, though they were unable to reach the residents.

Officers left after talking with a neighbor who reported hearing and seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Officers returned to the house two more times Saturday morning, but were still unable to reach anyone who lived at the home.

Police said the same officer who initially responded to the call returned to the home Wednesday morning and noticed mail in the mailbox and newspapers in the yard. Officials then made the decision to enter the home and, once inside, discovered four bodies.

Police have released few details about the investigation, but did say the victims are two men and two women.

MESQUITE — Four adults found dead inside a home in the 1400 block of Paintbrush Street Wednesday morning may have been there since Saturday, Mesquite Police Department spokesman Bill Hedgpeth said.

Officers were initially called to the address at 6:30 a.m. Saturday after witnesses said they heard gunshots.

Hedgpeth said responding officers found nothing "amiss outside the residence" and saw no signs of forced entry. Police knocked on the door and got no answer.

Hedgpeth said the officer spoke with a neighbor who did not report hearing or seeing anything out of the usual.

The officer left, but returned twice that day to try and get someone to open the door. Both attempts were unsuccessful.
On Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m, Hedgpeth said the same officer returned to the home and saw mail in the mailbox and newspapers in the yard.

"The decision was made to force entry into the locked home, at which point the officers discovered the bodies," Hedgpeth wrote in a release.

The bodies of two men and two women were found in separate rooms. A gun was recovered inside the residence "near one of the deceased," but police are hesitant to discuss details in the case, Hedgpeth said, citing the ongoing investigation.

"At this point, the circumstances surrounding the deaths are undetermined," the release said.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner was at the scene. Hedgpeth was not sure if the victims are related.
Authorities have not released further information.
