  • Anyone build their own wood furniture?

Specifically their dinning room stuff? The s/o wants to build it ourselves as a project. I'm not too concerned with the table as it fairly simple but I've never attempted chairs.

    Any tips or advice appreciated

Patience is required with any wood projects, I have a good friend that has built a full set but it is his profession.

In my household, we determined pretty early on that God made Haverty's and Weir's for a reason.

I built one from a reclamed fence. The long sides are benches and we just found and reupholstered to vintage chairs for the heads of the table.

I love wood working, but outside of basic things that I can't destroy, I leave it to the amish.

I have built a couple of pieces, but am by no means an expert.

Best advice I can give you is buy a piece of the wood you are going to use, sand it up to your final grit for the project, and test out your stain/paint/finish. It may not turn out like you think, and the last thing you want to do is build something and then hate the color.

If you are using pine note that it will probably stain very blotchy, so you will want to use a pre-stain conditioner. This will lighten the final color a little because the wood will soak up less stain. Make sure to use the conditioner in your test as well so you will know what to expect.

The table is really easy to make, just get an old cable spool, BAM, done!

Yeah. I like the table but I'm not sure about chairs. I may just build benches

Just make her the picnic tables that use gutters down the center to hold ice for beer/drinks. Tell her you were thinking of her and didn't want to make her get up to fetch your beer.

No problem, good luck with the project.

I just noticed that you mentioned chairs. If you go that route take pictures, I would love to see how they turn out (especially if you plan on padding and upholstering them). Just built a dining room table with a buddy and I told him no way I was messing with chairs. We did a bench and then he is going to buy a couple of chairs.
