Yeah I can't stand it when I'm looking at something and a clerk ask "can I help you?" simply because these are the orders from the manager.
I was in Home Depot one weekday morning walking to the tool section and on my way four orange aprons asked me if I needed help. By the time #4 asked I was pissed! I wasn't looking I was just walking.
Retail sales has lost almost all of it's customer savy now because it is only a part time job nowdays. If I need help I'll ask!

Cabella's is just the same. Out of 10 items 9 had a extended warranty option. Sleeping bag, stainless steel water bottles, compass, flashlight, everything. The cashier HAS to ask you and all you can do is laugh cause she even knew it was b.s.

Office Depot has this obnoxious practice of having every single person ask if I was "finding everything ok today"? I must have answered that question 7 times! Do they think I wouldn't ask them if I couldn't find something?!! That's over-kill, that makes me uncomfortable. When they cross that line and then 'the service' becomes a negative rather than a positive.

the warranties are crap and are only pushed be because management wants the free money in thier books. The warrenty does nothing for sales person or the person buying.

rewards card are designed to capture more of your money. a credit card thats only usable at one buisness and has horrible default aprs doesnt help the consumer, it helps the bottom line of the company by praying on the late payments. Plus it adds another layer personal information they gather so they can send junk to any address you give them.

Why do printers not have cables? Its cheaper for the mfr to not include them and suppliers ask that they not be included in their custom skus so they can overcharge on the add on

Why do you need to buy more ink? because the mfrs are including starting cartridges so they can get the quicker sell of full ones. If the suppliers this could change remember most are already receiving custom skus

Why does officedepot swarm on you? because its part of their secret shop if they dont great the shop in a short amount of time its a specific strike against the sales person. Its the same reason they have the robotic greeter thats supposed to welcome you to the store within 7 seconds. Supposedly this type of pestering makes people buy more according to surveys. Bad Secret shops has a negative impact on the sales person and manager, But has no real positives.

Very well said and of these factors you mentioned I do know about especially from working retail. Which totally sucked!

The secret shopper rating system is such an out dated and old school thing that Wal-Mart corp. had practically invented back in the 70’s and since has been the standard in the hospitality and retail industries.
