  • GoPro camera advice

I'm taking the boys tuna fishing this week out in Venice, LA.

I bought a GoPro Hero2 camera from Academy (clearance $179.99) with a suction cup mount and handle bar mount. My thoughts are I'm going to attach it to the rigging of the boat up high and try to get the full bow of the boat while we are catching the 120-180 lb yellowfin tuna.

I know the battery life shows to be max 2.5 hours (I bought a spare), and I bought a 32 GB SDHC card, but what resolution setting would be best to get the most life out of the battery/SD card?

I don't have to have stunning 1080 HD quality, I don't even need 720p. I just want the best quality I can get out of my SD card/battery life.

    TIA

Have you looked into a battery 'bacpac'?

For $40 you can double your shooting time.

I didn't even see that option at the kiosks I visited.

It's too late now, we leave in the morning. Damn.

You should be able to get one local. Most places that are GoPro retailers keep some of the accessories in stock also.

I've been to 3 places local, and didn't see that at any if them. I may try Best Buy on the way home from the gym/court.

update the software, and run a USB to it.

we run on the lower 720 setting in the race cars all day long with the usb plugged into a cig lighter adaptor.

If I were you i'd run it at 720 @ 60FPS. That would yield the smoothest video and still give you HD. Maybe take a laptop so you can move video from the memory card to the computer to clear out space.

personally i like 720p 60fps now but i'm doing fast action stuff.

previously i was using 1080p 30fps then realized the motion isnt as good and the file size is stupidly big.

also buy more batteries. i bought a 2 pack of wasabi batteries with external charger.

Remember guys, this is gonna be on a 33' Contender and in a saltwater environment. I can't keep exposing it for battery/SD card changes and having it hard wired.

Then you sir cannot run it for as long as you would like.

Perhaps put it on camera mode and take a picture every 30 seconds or something.

That's a pretty cool option. It's really neat to go back through the pictures looking for that perfect shot.

Have fun on your fishing trip!

Well, like Matt suggested, I went to Best Buy to try to get the batter backpack and case extender, but the rep at BB told me that those are only available online.

We are leaving in the morning. I guess I'll just make do with what I have.....

I did stop and get a Lifeproof case for my iPhone. I'll just use it as a backup.

That's sucks. I'd let you borrow mine but I'm not around to give it you.

                              <----- Jelly

My Hero3 is probably somewhere in the bottom of the Atlantic by now. The wrist strap came off while my son was in the ocean in Florida last July.
