Was hoping for a bit better but I'd still drive it.

does it require premium or does direct injection allow the use of 87 octane?
if it requires premium, I'd rather have a damn 3/4 ton diesel that gets the same mileage and holds its value 5x better

I'm betting a good tune and a free flow exhaust w/ deleted cats, etc. will net some more mpg

Ford and GM are both planning to put their trucks through a huge weight reduction program. Ford says they'll use more magnesium and light weight alloys in their future trucks. I think they were looking at getting a 500lbs weight reduction. The problem there is that the price of their pickups will increase dramatically...
IMO the solution can be much simpler. Just give us the updated Ranger. Drop the V6 F-150 and bring the new Ranger to the US with that 3.7V6. The new Ranger is nearly 1000lbs lighter than the F-150. How can it not get better than 30mpg with that engine. Also offer the ecoboost 2.0 liter I4 (nearly 250hp). Another option is to start making the F-150 SMALLER. It is huge. It is gargantuan compared to the F-series of just a few generations ago. You can definitely make is smaller without reducing the most important needs of the truck (towing, cargo capacity, etc).
Those things would definitely bring down Ford's CAFE average and still let the public enjoy their trucks..

I guess after daily driving a mega cab for 2yrs, I don't subscribe to the "make them smaller" mentality. I am a large American... I want room and comfort
