Hell, the last time I saw Eric at his work was at least a couple years ago when Jodi was selling a Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens. I brought money to Eric and picked it up at his work, I don't even know if he's at the same location or not.

There wasn't interest, but there was a fee. From IRS.gov:

User fees If an installment agreement is approved, a one-time user fee will be charged. The user fee for a new agreement is $105 or $52 for agreements where payments are deducted directly from your bank account. For eligible individuals with lower incomes, the fee can be reduced to $43

As long as you make your payments on time you can drag it out for a while. Just pay it off soon, the interest and penalties suck with the IRS.

I would imagine that if you file joint then the IRS would automatically apply the refund to the balance owed???

Wrong. Penalties and interest start accumulating April 16, and they stack up fast. You can fill out a form to file later, but if you owe, see the note above.

you can
(a) file an extension and pay in the fall (or make payments as long as its paid in full by years end
(b) make a payment plan now and have smaller payments till the full payment is made by the end of the year
(c) i was told a few years back you had to pay in full when you filed an extension, but i paid it out when extension was up
(d) you are (supposedly) not able to make payments consecutive years, meaning back to back taxes due

best advise, pay it now and move on, especially with kids, things can always come up that can put you in a bind
