Reports: Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shot at public event
By Felicia Sonmez
Updated: 1:55 p.m.
Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot on Saturday morning while hosting an event outside a Tucson grocery store, according to local news reports.
National Public Radio reported Saturday that Giffords, who in November narrowly won reelection to a third term, was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner" event when a gunman ran up and began shooting.
According to a local news report, Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range. She was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson; her condition was not immediately known.
Last March, Giffords was one of 10 House Democrats who were the subject of harassment over their support for the national health care overhaul. At the time, the front door of Giffords' Tucson office had been shattered in an early morning incident.

Another note.
She's a Democrat.
$10 says they try to blame some Conservative/Tea Party/2nd Amendment person for this.
She was PRO-border control, for a Dem.
Arizona's 8th Congressional District was one of 10 in the country bordering Mexico. Giffords has stated that the Arizona SB1070 legislation was a "clear calling that the federal government needs to do a better job".[18] and saying that she hopes the legislation acts as a wake up call to the federal government despite the fact that it "does nothing to secure our border". [19]
On August 31, 2010 Congresswoman Giffords praised the arrival of National Guard troops on the border: "Arizonans have waited a long time for the deployment of the National Guard in our state. Their arrival represents a renewed national commitment to protecting our border communities from drug cartels and smugglers."[20]
Giffords worked to secure passage of the August 2010 bill to to fund more Border Patrol agents and surveillance technology for Arizona’s border with Mexico. The legislation passed the House of Representatives only to be sent back by the U.S. Senate with reduced funding. Ultimately a $600 million bill was passed and signed in to law. The bill was over $100 million less than Giffords fought for, but she said that “This funding signals a stronger federal commitment to protect those Americans who live and work near the border.”[21]
In 2008, Giffords introduced legislation that would have increased the cap on the H-1B visa from 65,000 per year to 130,000 per year.[22] If that was not sufficient, according to her legislation, the cap would have been increased to 180,000 per year.[23] The bill would have allowed, at most, 50% of employees at any given company with at least 50 employees to be H-1B guest workers.[24] A large number of H-1B visas are used by outsourcing companies, as five of the top ten users of the visa are regularly outsourcing corporations.[25] Giffords claimed the bill would help high-tech companies in southern Arizona, some of which rely on H1-B employees.[24] Giffords' bill was never voted on by the house of representatives."Self-government won't work without self-discipline." - Paul Harvey

And the Sheep that follow NPR's liberalness are already massing the herds.
Law enforcement officials continue to piece together the facts from Saturday's shooting rampage that left a federal judge dead and a congresswoman critically injured in Arizona.

Not all conservatives are crazy like this guy but all crazies like this guy always seem to be conservative. I don't see this happening to a conservative politician (and rightly so). You may disagree with this man's actions but the same people who have convinced you to hate liberals are the same people who convinced this guy to shoot a bunch of innocent people. Both the insane and so-called rational conservatives listen to the SAME people. I know I'm not suppose to get political, blah blah blah, but a gunmen runs up to a publicly held political event and shoots a politician and her aids, come on people, the motives are pretty obvious here. One of the silver linings around this entire event is being reminded liberals are once again on the right side of history.

Sorry, but 'prudent' is just another name for cowardice. It's time to call the republican zealots on their behavior.

The posts here are sickening. With absolutely no information about the murderer's motivation, people are drawing partisian lines in the sand and concluding that ideology was the motive. Let not prematurely draw conclusions and instead send our thoughts and prayers to the community, and particularly the families involved in this terrible event.

Oh, look. Another silly liberal who thinks ZERO hate comes from the left. Seriously? No one side of the political spectrum has a monopoly on hate nor violence. I'm shocked that I have to point this out to you.

In other countries leaders must understand that they may die for their beliefs. In this country, we have glossed over that. In all reality, politicians need to know that if they truly believe in something that greatly affects others then they run the risk of exposure.
This is horrible and senseless. My thoughts go out to the families of all involved.

I hear 12 shot/dead which I'm sure is a rough estimate.
I'm not standing up for the shooter, but that may not be all his fault (well, it is his fault)
If someone returned fire, be it a cop, or an open carry civilian, they maybe responsible for an injury as well.DE OPPRESSO LIBER

EDIT NOTE: I initially deleted this diary out of sensitivity to the victims of Saturday's Tucson shooting, including my Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, who is now courageously fighting ...
My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!

I am from the Tucson area and live in Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords' district. I worked like a dog for her elections when she was in the Arizona House, surrounded by rightwing nutcases. When Arizona re-districted in 2002, a seat opened up and she was right smack in the middle of it. So was I because I live in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is at the heart of that - then - new CD. I was one of several people to talk her into running and pledging complete loyalty and pledging to raise as much money as possible for her.
She ended up running for the first time against a fellow AZ House member, Randy Graf who was a rightwing whacko who advocated guns in bars and was the "Russell Pearce before Russell Pearce" vis-a-vis border issues. With a LOT of hard work and plenty of money, Gabby won. Easier than thought, too. I never like to throw money in people's faces, but i have given Gabrielle Giffords THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars in both good times and bad times for me financially.
Fast forward to this election season. A weirdo asshole named Jesse Kelly who advocated ELIMINATING Social Security and was a tea bagger favorite got the GOP nom to run against her. I am gay and had been married and my spouse left me January 15, 2010. I shot myself in the mouth in a serious suicide attempt, because of that. Barely surviving, I spent two months in the hospital and still have some paralysis. I did receive a severance from my employer, as i had been laid off in December, 2009. That may have been part of the reason my spouse left me.
Anyway, after months of physical and mental rehab, I got back into the political scene and started working for Gabby once again. I raised over $100,000 for her and maxed her out myself out of my severance, even though i still don't have work and could not qualify for state aid because of my severance.
She wins her re-election and told me she was still a supporter of Speaker Pelosi at her victory party. We talked about how Nancy Pelosi was a successful woman and accomplished oh so much in just four years as Speaker.
Today, just a little while ago, I saw on Andrea Mitchell Reports (out of the one eye in can still see out of) that Giffords voted AGAINST Nancy Pelosi as our Minority Leader. Rhetorical question: I fought back from my condition and jumped in with both feet to help Gabrielle Giffords for THIS shit???
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is dead to me now. I won't lift a finger, make one phone call, nor will i EVER vote for her in the future. And why did she do this? Giffords never told me she was conservative Democrat. And her voting record is okay. Damn.

Holy shit! Those people are so far out there it's unbelievable. I guess they'll all be heading down to the local DNC office to get extra tinfoil."It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
