  • Anyone work for the state?

I have been offered a job at UT Southwestern and on the fence about moving jobs. The pay is slightly less (though I am going to try and negotiate). There are some added benefits like paid holidays, free health insurance, 401a rather than a 401k.

Just wondering really about the benefits and if they are really that good or not. Im a healthy person and dont ever use my health benefits thought free vs $150/month I pay now. Any other benefits for working for the government?

Why take a job making less scratch?

Its not much less money. Add in the fact I will actually get paid holidays (11 with floating holidays) + sick pay and not pay health insurance, we are right about where I am at now. I am going to negotiate my pay. Honestly they are within a couple dollars an hour. Im going to push them a little. I was offered 2 jobs there, they seem to want me but Im not sure how strict the state is with negotiation.

Well, I know in teaching, there is no negotiation. Based on your years of service, xxxx is your salary, done deal. Not sure if it would be applicable to your situation or not.

My dad and sister both work at southwestern... But they aren't in your field. So I don't really have anything constructive to add sorry.

EDIT: I did think about their benefits and I know they both have great coverage... And my sister gets several more holidays than I do. Dad doesn't but he only works a day or two a week at this point.

I have a couple of friends that work there, though not in nursing. They all seem to be somwhat happy with it.

My client base is made up solely of state and local agencies, and the concensus from them seems to be that the government is a bit more loyal to their employees than the private sector. Being that alot of positions have a structured path fior advancment, you aren't completely sheilded from the economy in terms of raises, but alot moreso than the rest of us.

There are no gurantee of course, unless you get it on paper, but I see both of these as pluses in the long-term.

I would say do it. Do they allow employees to accrue unlimited annual/sick leave?

From what I read in the packet, yes. I have only taken one vacation in the last 4 years. I have hundreds of PTO hours to cash in if I leave my current job.

i work for UT but doing something completely different, i will say working for UT has been great and you can tell by the dozens of people that have been working here for 20+ years. hell there are a handful of people that have been here for over 30 years in my department alone
